Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and more across the country.

Position

Description:

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is seeking an Urban Green Environmental Education Intern to inspire and engage high school students enrolled in Channelview ISD’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) horticulture and agriculture programs. This internship offers a unique opportunity to build experience in environmental education, sustainability, and green workforce development while working directly in a school‑based setting.

The intern will assist with environmental education workshops, co‑facilitate student‑led garden projects, support green career exposure activities, and help integrate real‑world sustainability themes into CTE instruction. The intern will also support SCA’s native fruit tree program and assist in tabling and representing SCA at community outreach events as needed. This role is ideal for early‑career professionals interested in teaching, public engagement, urban farming, and project‑based learning.

Key

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in facilitating outdoor environmental education and garden‑based learning for high school students enrolled in CTE horticulture courses;
  • Support student‑led conservation projects such as native planting, pollinator garden installations, or food access initiatives;
  • Coordinate career exposure opportunities including guest speakers, resume‑building activities, and field visits;
  • Collaborate with CTE instructors to align programming with academic and workforce objectives;
  • Support SCA’s native fruit tree program, including workshop facilitation and distribution logistics;
  • Conduct community outreach to increase student awareness and participation;
  • Help maintain accurate records of student engagement and project outcomes;
  • Represent SCA at school and community events;
  • Wear SCA uniform during service and complete timesheets, output logs, and reporting requirements.
Marginal Duties:
  • Support other SCA education and outreach initiatives as needed;
  • Assist with Saturday or evening community events, including tabling and event support;
  • Collaborate with Channelview ISD staff and SCA partners to enhance programming.
Required Qualifications:
  • Experience working or volunteering with youth in educational or community settings;
  • Interest in environmental education, urban gardening, or conservation service;
  • Ability to serve both independently and as part of a team;
  • Reliable transportation to Channelview ISD and associated service locations;
  • Strong communication and organizational skills;
  • Commitment to completing the full 26‑week service term;
  • Must pass required background checks prior to start.
Intern

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with garden‑based instruction or project‑based learning;
  • Familiarity with community outreach or youth mentoring;
  • Basic understanding of sustainability, food systems, or climate impacts;
  • First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain;
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages commonly spoken in the Houston area (preferred but not required).
