Position Summary
Staff Development/Infection Preventionist RN evaluates the quality of resident care and outcomes as they relate to Healthcare Acquired Infections (HAI) and Community Acquired Infections (CAI) in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and Life Care standards. Collects, prepares, and analyzes HAI data; presents data and makes recommendations. Monitors compliance with infection control standards. Prepares and presents education for staff, residents, and families.
Serves as a resource to all departments.
- Attends continuing education programs (e.g., Infection Prevention and Control)
- Works within the department and throughout the facility
- Subject to frequent interruptions, hostile or emotionally upset patients, family members, and visitors
- Works beyond normal hours, weekends, holidays, and other positions temporarily as necessary
- Subject to falls, burns, and infectious waste exposure, including AIDS and COVID-19
Licensure/Certification s
- Nursing diploma (associate’s or bachelor’s degree)
- Currently licensed/registered RN; active license in good standing
- CPR certification upon hire and ongoing
- Completed an approved Infection Preventionist Certification course (e.g., CIC, CBIC, IP-BC, IPCA, CDC)
- Prior experience with geriatrics preferred
- Additional certifications as required (e.g., Certified TB Nurse)
- Monitor public health advisories from local, state, and federal agencies, including CDC
- Serve as on-site IPC for COVID-19 prevention and response
- Maintain current knowledge of infection control trends and employee health practices
- Perform work within scope of license; make independent decisions when warranted
- Understand laws, regulations, and guidelines governing nursing functions in a post-acute care facility
- Implement and interpret the Infection Prevention and Control Program policies and procedures
- Maintain professional relationships with associates, vendors, and maintain confidentiality
- Follow company policies on harassment and compliance
- Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate facility-wide infection prevention and control systems
- Provide educational resources on COVID-19, infectious diseases, outbreaks, and infection control practices
- Monitor usage and burn rate of PPE; review CDC guidance regularly
- Monitor HAI and CAI data, antibiotic use, micro reports, trend infections
- Serve as QAPI Committee member and chair Infection Prevention and Control Committee
- Lead in Antibiotic Stewardship program; review facility assessment for infection control resources
- Provide clinical lead for Associate Health, Vaccinations, Safer Sharps, Post Exposure Coordination
- Administer respiratory fit testing as RPA (Respiratory Protection Administrator)
- Participate in regulatory surveys and support proper IPC standards
- Demonstrate excellent customer service and positive attitude toward patients
- Assist in patient evacuation; dependable regular attendance; use reasoning and judgment
- Communicate productively within an interdisciplinary team; read, write, speak, and understand English
- Lift and move within specified limits (e.g., 35 lbs floor to waist)
