Northrop Grumman Space Systems offers an exciting career opportunity for a Systems Safety Engineer to join the Systems Safety Engineering team within the Launch Vehicles business unit located in Chandler, AZ.
Position OverviewThe System Safety Engineering Team utilizes system engineering processes and tools to drive the overall system design to meet safety requirements while minimizing risk and maximizing mission reliability and success. The role interfaces with various ranges to ensure launch vehicles meet safety requirements and provide high reliability to the customer.
Job Responsibilities- Interact daily with internal and external customers and partners on system safety topics.
- Lead a small team of System Safety Engineers in defining, implementing, and verifying System Safety requirements.
- Understand the entire mission, including launch vehicle, payload, ground support, range infrastructure, and safety interfaces.
- Apply the systems engineering process to define and verify launch vehicle and ground support requirements.
- Define launch vehicle‑to‑payload interface requirements and support launch campaign activities at various launch sites.
- Manage interface with customer safety personnel and support ground operations and launch mission working groups.
- Support launch vehicle design and development to meet safety and mission success goals.
- Analyze Integration and Test processes to demonstrate that safety and mission success requirements are met.
- Conduct system‑level analyses to architect next‑generation mission concepts while complying with safety requirements.
- Explain how safety requirements are met for design, build, and test to external customers.
- Review product systems, establish safety requirements, and recommend safety criteria in design and procedures.
- Develop safety documents to support customer and test/operational range requirements and perform audits of operational areas.
Level 2: $79,200 – $118,000
Level 3: $98,400 – $147,600
Required for either a Systems Engineer (Level
2) or Principal Systems Engineer (Level
3) – see respective qualification lists.
- U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
- Minimum of 10% travel required.
- Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline (or Master’s degree) with related experience (2 years for Level 2, 5 years for Level
3). - Experience with launch vehicle system design, testing, or mission operations.
- Exposure to the systems engineering discipline and its application for system safety.
- Experience tailoring and implementing FAA, RCC‑319, RCC‑324, MIL‑STD‑882, or AFSPCMAN‑91‑710.
- Leadership experience managing a small engineering team (Level
3).
- Active DoD Secret clearance.
- Relationships with FAA or Range Safety Personnel.
- Experience with Solid Rocket Boost Stages and Liquid‑Fueled Rockets.
- Experience in launch vehicle system integration, testing, and evaluation.
- Experience presenting to customers and DoD personnel.
- Experience in developing and maintaining requirements control documents and related processes.
- Experience using DOORS or other Requirements Management Tools.
