DEFINITION: The job of Special Education Teacher is to develop special education students' success in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living by implementing district‑approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities, outcomes; addressing students' specific needs; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. TASKS:
- Adapt classroom work to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
- Administer first aid and assistance to medically fragile children (e.g., tube feeding, toileting, diapering).
- Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to support teacher's expectations, develop improvement methods, and reinforce classroom goals in the home.
- Assess students' social, behavioral, motor development, communication, and academic needs, progress, expectations, and goals; evaluate placement and program success.
- Collaborate with school personnel, parents, and community agencies to improve student outcomes, develop solutions, and plan curriculum.
- Direct instructional assistants, volunteers, and student aides to provide an effective program and address individual student needs.
- Instruct students to improve academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
- Manage student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Prepare teaching materials and related reports (grades, attendance, anecdotal records) for lesson implementation and student progress documentation.
- Report incidents (fights, suspected child abuse, substance abuse) to maintain safety and comply with Education Code and policies.
- Participate in meetings to convey and gather necessary information.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
KNOWLEDGE required includes algebra and/or geometry, reading manuals, writing documents in prescribed formats, presenting information, and analyzing situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge includes age‑appropriate activities, bilingual (English/Spanish) helpful, relevant codes, policies, regulations, stages of child development, and working knowledge of the school system.
SKILLS required include analytical skills, assessment application, record keeping, promoting child‑centered environment, verbal and written communication, and ability to upgrade skills as needed.
ABILITY to schedule activities, meet deadlines, analyze data, work with diverse individuals, and problem‑solve.
SPECIFIC ABILITIES include adapting curriculum, addressing learning styles, assessing outcomes, communicating, maintaining a climate of respect, implementing activities, classroom management, confidentiality, meeting deadlines, team work, and handling interruptions.
RESPONSIBILITIES include working under limited supervision, leading and coordinating others, and operating within a defined budget.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Work performed indoors. Requires frequent sitting, standing, bending, repetitive motion, vision monitoring, and lifting up to 15 pounds. May need to monitor and restrain children. Physical demands include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, fine finger dexterity. Approx. 5% sitting, 20% walking, 75% standing. Hazard‑free environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in a related area.
- Valid Arizona Teaching Certificate in Special Education.
- Certain endorsement may be required for certain positions.
- Valid Arizona IVP Clearance Card.
