The Utilities Maintenance Worker is a seasonal position primarily responsible for assisting Utilities staff with the daily maintenance, operation, and repair of the city’s water treatment facilities, water distribution system, sanitary sewer system, and municipal streetlights. Under the general supervision of the Utilities Superintendent, this role involves operating equipment, performing maintenance tasks, and engaging with the public, businesses, and other stakeholders in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner.
This position will remain open until filled and may close prior to May 5, 2026.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Assist with the maintenance, operations, and repair of the municipal water treatment plants, water distribution system, sanitary sewer system, streetlights, and traffic signals.
- Assists Utilities staff with Gopher State One Call utility locating.
- Performs inspections of gate valves, curbstops, and fire hydrants.
- Uses asset management and GIS software to perform and document work activities.
- Assists with water meter reading, inspection, and repair.
- Assists with sewer jetting and vactoring operations.
- Establishes a friendly and positive rapport with facility customers, vendors, employees, general public, and promotes a respectful and friendly environment for all in the facility.
- Assist with hydrant flushing, gate valve exercising, and other distribution system maintenance items.
- Reports any potentially dangerous conditions, accidents, and damage to the Utilities management.
- Performs general maintenance and cleaning the facilities and grounds such as but not limited to sweeping and mopping floors, garbage collection, cleaning all surfaces (table, chairs, benches, etc.) and spills, weed whipping, and picking up litter.
- Follows all safety procedures and enforces rules.
- Operates city vehicles, variety of equipment, and various hand and power tools.
- Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
- Knowledge of Utilities practices and procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with general public and staff while displaying political agility and discretion.
- Ability to follow-through with work assignments, provide self-direction, and maintain safety procedures.
- Ability to provide good customer service skills to a diverse customer base and effectively communicate with customers, general public, staff, and others.
- Ability to work independently, making decisions based on established City policy, standards and requirements.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written assignments.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Ability to lift 25 lbs.
- Prior experience working with tools and materials commonly used in Utility or yard maintenance.
- Must be available to work weekdays daytime, evenings, and weekends.
- Valid MN Driver’s license with good driving history.
- Must be able to physically perform all essential duties of the position.
- Prior utilities experience.
Shifts are typically Monday through Friday during standard business.
WORKING CONDITIONS Environmental and Physical ConditionsPossible exposure to inclement weather conditions. Duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing, walking for prolonged periods of time; kneeling, climbing, bending, and stooping, moderate lifting and carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate/heavy weight; general manual dexterity; adequate hearing, vision, and speech required; and must be able to evaluate situations and react appropriately. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, or toxic agents.
