Position Summary
The Police Officers of the Champlin Police Department hold various ranks and are assigned to various positions, but all are first and foremost general Police Officers under this section. All must be able to perform the essential functions of a Police Officer. All must meet and maintain the required qualifications, and all must be able to perform the physical demands listed in this section.
The ability of the department to perform its mission is directly related to the abilities of those individuals who function as Police Officers.
Opportunities for job assignments include, but are not limited to:
Patrol Officer, General Investigator, Drug Task Force Detective, School Resource Officer, Traffic Enforcement Officer, Field Training, Defensive Tactics Training, Firearms Instructor, Drone Operator, Mobile Field Force, Weapons of Mass Destruction Team, Bike Patrol, Community Outreach Specialist, and more.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Being observant to identify breaches of the peace, law violations, unsafe situations, or calls for service and acting upon them.
- Enforcing federal and state statutes and local ordinances.
- Making arrests.
- Delivering physical force along the force continuum.
- Safely rescuing people in danger.
- Delivering first aid.
- Conducting traffic enforcement through vehicle stops and providing traffic control.
- Applying sound investigative technique to traffic accidents, crimes, potential crimes, ordinance violations, or other situations as assigned.
- Collecting, packaging and preserving evidence.
- Conducting searches.
- Providing counsel, guidance, and service to the public to develop community understanding and cooperation in matters related to public safety and law enforcement.
- Assisting fellow officers as needed.
- Notifying appropriate personnel of situations that may require additional resources.
- Processing information received from multiple sources—including verbal, written, electronic, radio, telephone, and other sources—and disseminating information through the same sources.
- Traveling efficiently through Champlin and surrounding areas, including operating an emergency vehicle safely and effectively.
- Providing accurate and effective testimony.
- Preparing accurate and effective police reports.
- Effectively deploying all necessary equipment.
- Testifying in court.
- Candidates must meet all licensing requirements as mandated by the Minnesota Peace Officers Standards and Training Board pursuant to Minnesota Statutes.
- Maintaining the license (M.S. 626.843) and continuing education and training necessary to fulfill POST requirements is an individual responsibility.
- If an officer’s license expires, is suspended or revoked and the officer becomes ineligible to perform law‑enforcement duties, the officer will be suspended without pay pending formal resolution by the chief of police.
- History of crime‑free and dependable behavior.
- Ability to make sound and independent decisions in the absence of supervision regarding appropriate police action.
- Effective and efficient interaction with co‑workers.
- Ability to perform essential functions and physical requirements outlined in this section.
- Current knowledge of federal and state statutes, municipal ordinances, and modern police practices—including rules of arrest, evidence, and search and seizure.
- Proficiency with firearms, intermediate weapons and all other required equipment and techniques.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Professional conduct in emergency, stressful, and dangerous situations.
- Willingness to perform strenuous activities as required by duty situations.
- Possession of a valid Minnesota driver’s license.
- Passing physical and psychological examinations and any physical fitness requirements as directed.
