Camp Counselor
GENERAL FUNCTION
The Sports Camp Counselor position is responsible for assisting in the planning, development, and facilitation of sports camps activities. Counselors will work directly with and supervise campers each day, and will work in a team with other counselors and the Sports Camp Coordinator to facilitate camp activities each day.
This position is seasonal (May 11, 2026 - August 7, 2026). If you want to continue employment with the Y after summer camp, you will need to apply with the desired department.
SPORTS CAMP OVERVIEWThe Stephens Family YMCA runs over 80 camps each summer, including a variety of sports and specialty camps. Sports Camp Counselors would be directly involved in various sports camps or specialty camps. Sports camps have 20-30 campers that attend each week to improve their skills in the specific sports, but also to have fun, develop friendships, and create great experiences in the summer.
Counselors will work with 8-10 other counselors to lead the camp and facilitate activities to give campers the best experience possible. YMCA camps are fun, high energy, and a highly rewarding experience to work!
This position requires that the applicant be at least sixteen years of age. Applicants must be comfortable working with children and in a team setting. Applicants are preferred to have experience working with children, in camp settings, or comparable experiences. Applicants should be able to work 20-35 hours a week during the summer between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M., Monday through Friday.

When this position’s duties are fulfilled successfully, the YMCA camp programs will be viewed as a quality day camp that focuses on the safety of children and improve the quality of life in the Champaign County area. Campers will improve their skills based on the specific sports camps, acquire an understanding of YMCA values, an appreciation of others, and a sense of belonging.
