Overview

The Aqua Fitness Instructor at Stephens Family YMCA teaches water exercise classes in a safe, fun, and positive environment that welcomes and respects all individuals. This position supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Lead and demonstrate aqua fitness movements in shallow and/or deep water
  • Stand, walk, and move in and around the pool deck for extended periods
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere on deck, alert to safety needs and cues from participants
  • Observe participants for proper technique, engagement, and signs of distress
  • Lift and move aquatic equipment as needed
Responsibilities
  • Design and instruct safe and effective aqua fitness classes, following genre guidelines or freestyle classes, that meet the needs of class participants and have the knowledge to offer options according to the fitness level of participants
  • Demonstrate good verbal and non-verbal communication with members and staff, motivate small and large groups, and be able to improvise quickly and appropriately when faced with unexpected circumstances
  • Be in good physical condition, able to teach from the pool deck, endure warm and humid indoor aquatic environments for extended periods
  • Apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology and their relationship to programming
  • Understand the properties of water and its effects on participant’s movement
  • Notify coordinator when in need of a sub and follow standard protocol for class coverage
  • Be punctual, dressed in professional attire, and prepared for each class scheduled
  • Provide a high degree of member service through professional relationships with members regarding their needs, concerns, and questions about the YMCA and the Aqua Fitness programming
  • Build rapport with members, promote authentic relationships, help members connect with others at the YMCA, and promote other YMCA programming and events
  • Maintain class attendance reports
  • Obtain and maintain a nationally recognized aqua fitness instructor certification, general or specialty
  • Obtain CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers certification within 60 days of hire
  • Attend mandatory quarterly 2-hour Aqua Fitness in-services, annual special Aqua Fitness event, annual all-staff meeting, and special trainings when offered
  • Perform other duties as assigned
