Overview
The HIM Certified Coder is responsible for accurate and timely coding of hospital inpatient, hospital outpatient and/or professional fee encounters using appropriate ICD-10/ICD-PCS, CPT, or HCPCS codes and appropriate coding software such as computer-assisted coding and encoders as a means to ensure compliant billing of Carle claims. The coder is responsible for understanding and applying regulatory coding guidelines, such as National and Local Coverage Determinations, and the application of CPT modifiers.
The coder also applies coding knowledge to resolve billing edits related to coding. The coder uses Carle electronic medical record systems to review clinical encounters.
- Responsible for accurately coding all records according to the appropriate coding classification (ICD-10 and/or CPT and/or HCPCS and modifiers) so the assignment of codes reflects the diagnoses and procedures pertinent to the patient.
- Provide interdepartmental coding assistance as needed to determine accurate coding assignments.
- Develop methodologies to provide a coding process compliant with regulatory agencies, including CMS publications, Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant, etc.
- Facilitate optimization of revenue while maintaining compliance standards through auditing/monitoring, training, charge facilitation through the claim scrubber system, and research on coding/billing topics as requested.
- Serve as an expert resource regarding CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and other coding systems and regulatory guidelines for internal and external parties.
- Act as a liaison for coding and billing staff to ensure accurate charge capture.
- Report documentation and coding improvement needs based on review findings.
- Maintain coding certifications and knowledge to perform job duties; perform provider and peer coding audits as requested; assist with monitoring internal controls for coding and billing; facilitate external audit activities and reporting to appropriate administrative personnel.
- Education:
High school Diploma or G.E.D. - Certifications:
CIC, CCS-P, CCS, RHIT, RHIA, CPC, COC (list as applicable certifications from American Academy of Professional Coders and American Health Information Management Association). - Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding rules and guidelines; ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of medical science, anatomy and physiology; ability to perform computer data entry.
- Experience with encoders or other coding software packages preferred.

Compensation and BenefitsThe compensation range for this position is $23.58 per hour - $39.38 per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered will depend on factors including experience, qualifications, location, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
