Job Responsibilities
  • Accomplishes departmental law enforcement, order maintenance, criminal investigation and criminal intelligence objectives through effective accomplishment of assigned duties.
  • Investigates and reports factual information regarding all incidents of crime personally discovered or reported by a citizen.
  • Intervenes in interpersonal crisis, conflict and domestic violence situations to protect life, property and personal rights.
  • Initiates investigations into all suspicious or hazardous circumstances observed while patrolling assigned area.
Required Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States (must meet I-9 requirements).
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Applicant must be 21 years of age by the date of hire.
  • Some convictions, misdemeanors or serious traffic offenses may disqualify applicants from further consideration if the criminal conviction history has a substantial relationship to the position applied for.

Medical, physical, and psychological examinations and a criminal background check will be required. The starting annual salary is $80,925 plus an excellent fringe benefits package.

This position is covered under the City of Champaign Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Bargaining Unit labor agreement.

Health Insurance

The City of Champaign offers a robust PPO Select Network plan through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois.

Fraternal Order of Police employees pay $35 of the employee health insurance premium per month and 50 percent of the premium for dependent(s) for regular full‑time employees for the 2025/2026 plan year. Premiums may be made on a pre‑tax basis, through the City’s Section 125 plan. Health insurance coverage begins on the date of hire and ends on the employee’s last day of work at the City.

Dental and Vision Insurance

Employees may purchase dental and/or vision insurance through payroll deduction. Employees pay 100 percent of the monthly premium for this coverage. Premiums for dental and vision insurance may be made on a pre‑tax basis, through the City’s Section 125 plan. Dental and vision insurance begins after waiting for one complete calendar month.
