Job Overview
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and it is harming too many lives. At Prostate Cancer UK, one of our top priorities is funding research that leads to real change. It is vital we do our best to make sure this research makes a meaningful difference to men’s lives, and that’s where you come in. We are growing our Research Funding Team and are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive Grant Manager to help deliver our core funding schemes and embark on new, exciting initiatives to fund ground‑breaking research that will revolutionise how prostate cancer is diagnosed and treated.
Responsibilities- Take responsibility for a portfolio of around a third of our active research grants, providing support and guidance to the researchers leading them.
- Act as the main point of contact for grant applicants, supporting them through the application process and providing guidance about remit and eligibility.
- Work with Senior Research Officers to ensure our funding schemes run smoothly, timing and supporting our funding Committees in their review of the applications we receive.
- Manage a portfolio of active research grants, closely monitoring their progress and finances, and providing valuable support and advice to our grant holders and their teams.
- Develop a detailed understanding of the science behind the projects, building positive working relationships with researchers and their institutions.
- Monitor portfolio for demonstrable outputs (publications, presentations, intellectual property, etc.) and work closely with colleagues in other teams to showcase this to supporters and potential donors.
- Support the delivery of our research funding grant schemes, managing at least one of our grant rounds while maintaining robust processes and adhering to industry and department standards.
- Help direct our activities to involve people with experience of prostate cancer in research, including their involvement in the assessment of proposals and supporting researchers to include patients in the design and delivery of projects.
- Consistently perform to the highest standards, try new ideas, and continually improve how we manage research grants and engage with the research community.
- Handle a wide range of enquiries regarding prostate cancer research, research grant management and policies, and our various funding schemes.
- Proactively seek improvements that benefit men with, or at high risk of, prostate cancer.
- Educated to degree level in a biomedical (or similar relevant) subject, and/or with experience of working in research funding/administration.
- Understand the fundamentals of grant funding and research administration, with demonstrable experience managing grant rounds from start to completion.
- Experience supporting research funding committees, including sourcing suitable reviewers and committee members, governing processes, and preparing and delivering meetings, writing minutes and providing written feedback for applicants.
- Understand the challenges researchers may face and the support they need when applying for funding or managing an active grant.
- Aware of the wider research funding landscape and associated policies, with experience of different funding approaches and a drive to improve efficiencies.
- Meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage responsibilities independently, prioritising workload in accordance with business needs.
- Proficient in standard IT packages (particularly Microsoft Office) and ideally with experience of grant‑management software.
- Self‑assured, clear communicator capable of building strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including early‑career and senior researchers.
- Excited and motivated to achieve major improvements for men with, or at high risk of, prostate cancer.
