Purpose of the Role The Strategy Controller will work closely with the Director of Strategy and Chief Strategy & Transformation Officer to shape, lead and deliver pan‑BBC strategy projects that align with the BBC’s long‑term vision and objectives. This role acts as a key deputy to the Director of Strategy, with shared accountability for development and implementation of strategic initiatives across multiple BBC priorities.
Why Join the Team The Strategy team helps the BBC define its future and develop a plan for getting there. We act as independent advisors to the leadership of the BBC, partnering with senior leaders to develop creative and practical ideas for how the BBC and its services should evolve. We use data and insight to help the organisation evaluate trade‑offs and choices where the answer isn’t highly obvious.
We are a highly motivated, energetic team, passionate about the BBC and the future of public service broadcasting. We care about developing our people and about creating a great culture in which to work. The Strategy team is part of the Group Strategy & Transformation division, with the Chief Strategy & Transformation Officer sitting on the BBC’s Executive Committee.
- Leading major cross‑cutting strategy projects and providing strategic direction across multiple teams or thematic areas
- Collaborating with Executive Committee members, divisional leadership, and other senior stakeholders to translate strategic priorities into action
- Championing rigorous analysis, evidence‑based decision‑making and creative problem‑solving
- Driving alignment and integration across strategy, business planning, performance and transformation activity across specific domain areas and more broadly, in collaboration with other senior leaders
- Keeping abreast of industry trends, competitor activity and performance, and best practice, incorporating new ideas and challenging established thinking
- Building good external relationships with other media organisations
- Contributing to the wider development and leadership of the division, promoting and championing collaboration, creativity and diversity; providing inspirational leadership and supporting career development and talent retention to help establish a high‑performance culture.
- Demonstrated experience at a senior level within a major media organisation and/or the media team of a top‑tier strategy consultancy
- Demonstrated sophisticated understanding of the media sector, BBC competitors, and comprehensive knowledge of current industry trends and issues, including public service broadcasting and the economics of the commercial media industry
- Managed senior‑level stakeholders, meeting tight deadlines while handling competing priorities in complex matrix organisational structures and engaging with external commercial and public sector leaders
- Influenced and motivated teams, engaged senior stakeholders, and built collaborative relationships across BBC departments and external agencies as an effective and persuasive communicator
- Demonstrated experience of leading, inspiring and developing a high‑performing team, creating a culture and environment for teams to test, develop and innovate ideas, taking smart risks as appropriate.
If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
