About The Role:

SHIFT PATTERN –Shift basis that will regularly include working weekdays and two out of every four weekends, plus late evening finish times. A 45‑minute unpaid lunch break is included in each shift worked.

Set in the heart of Hampstead Garden Suburb in North‑West London, The Henrietta Barnett School is a high‑performing state grammar school with approximately 800 students aged 11‑18. It is known for its warm, friendly ethos. The school is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Caretaker to join a site team of three members.

Main duties include but are not limited to:
  • Maintaining site security including daily management of alarm systems and being a keyholder for those systems
  • Carrying out regular daily duties including helping and general waste and recycling waste management
  • Basic joinery repairs including doors and classroom and office furniture
  • Basic plumbing repairs
  • Replacing bulbs and tubes and other maintenance tasks related to school lighting systems
  • Maintaining rainwater systems and drainage
  • Site Porter duties including handling deliveries and their distribution
  • Landscape maintenance including grass cutting, boundary hedge trimming and weed management
  • Refilling washroom consumables and classroom hygiene consumables
  • To be available to answer First Aid requests
  • To assist in safe evacuation of the school site in the event of an emergency, and to take sole responsibility of this task when working at the weekend
  • Completing staff requests such as preparing halls for exams, assemblies, and concerts
  • Assisting and liaising with external organisations/hirers of school facilities and preparing spaces and furniture in line with their requests
  • Assisting at school events
  • Assisting the IT and Estates Manager with contract works at peak times including school holiday periods
Person Specification

Essential:

  • Total reliability and trustworthiness
  • A high level of self‑motivation and personal discipline
  • Suitable and relevant past job experience
  • Showing pride in maintaining a high standard of work
  • An ability to work both as a member of a team and individually
  • An ability to work on a shift basis, with flexibility to work alternative days/hours as requested by the school
  • A willingness to be flexible and adapt to new demands
  • Excellent communication skills in order to liaise effectively with staff and students, visitors, contractors and hirers of school facilities
  • Working knowledge of basic IT applications, and in particular email
  • A sociable nature and good sense of humour

Desirable:

  • Prior experience working in a similar position in an educational setting
  • A good working knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and procedures
  • Availability to answer out‑of‑hours alarm activations and other emergencies

Depending on previous qualifications, the successful candidate will be required to undergo appropriate training for and not limited to:

  • Basic First Aid
  • Fire safety
  • Health and Safety awareness
  • Working at height
  • Manual handling
  • COSHH and PPE
  • Safe use of hand‑held garden maintenance equipment
