About Us

The extraordinary story of the power of empowerment.

Environmental Health at Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories, where passionate and expert professionals go above and beyond for their communities every day.

Natasha started her career in the NHS. She came to Westminster to do more for vulnerable people. When a family in her community reached out to her after their heating was cut off, Natasha took their situation seriously. Living in terrible conditions, and reaching desperation, they had nowhere else to turn. Natasha stepped in, holding the landlord to account and getting them to improve conditions for the family.

These are the moments that make her the proudest. Now, she uses her expertise and experience to empower others.

The Role

As a Private Sector Housing Environmental Health Officer, you can make your own powerful contribution to ensuring that every resident, business and visitor in Westminster can thrive in a clean and safe city. Working within Public Protection and Licensing, you will sit at the heart of our ambition to deliver a Fairer Westminster – enhancing the lives of our communities and supporting a healthier, more equitable place to live, work and visit.

You will form part of our Private Sector Housing Team within the Environmental Health service, working within and helping to nurture an integrated Public Protection and Licensing directorate. Through your work, you will support a culturally competent and inclusive workforce that reflects our communities and consistently models positive values and behaviours.

You will harness your environmental health knowledge to develop, implement and enforce environmental health policies and legislation, using your specialist technical skills to maintain and safeguard standards that protect people’s health and well-being, maintaining high standards across the city.

A central part of your role will be carrying out routine and unplanned visits and inspections to ensure compliance with legislation. Through engagement, education and, where necessary, enforcement, you will work with residents and businesses to improve conditions and reduce risks, taking a fair and proportionate approach to regulation.

You will deliver a responsive and informed service to our communities, handling complaints and concerns with professionalism and care, and resolving issues in a timely and efficient way. Where required, you will take enforcement action, initiate legal proceedings, and prepare and give evidence in court to uphold standards and protect the public.

Alongside this, you will promote and support the integration of environmental health principles across the Council and its partners, providing guidance and advice that helps improve public health and prevent problems before they arise.

You’re comfortable responding to complaints from members of the public, stakeholders and elected members, both in writing and in person, handling sensitive issues with professionalism and care.

You’ll have experience building trusted relationships quickly, even in challenging or emotionally charged situations. You know how to de-escalate conflict, provide clear education and advice, and use regulatory powers proportionately to effect positive change. You’re confident working with a range of agencies and professionals, building effective partnerships that improve public health and deliver excellent customer service.
