Overview
This is a valuable opportunity for those wishing to broaden their experience or pursue a career in hospital medicine. The post is based at the Imperial College Renal and Transplant Centre at Hammersmith Hospital, which is the largest renal and transplant centre in Europe. We cover kidney care across north‑west London and have extensive experience in managing patients with complex glomerulonephritis, renal transplantation and dialysis.
Responsibilitiesand Clinical Duties
Successful applicants will join a rota of IMT and foundation doctors. Inpatient clinical duties involve rotating through day and night shifts covering our renal high‑dependency unit (with acute renal transplantation), three acute nephrology wards, our renal admissions unit and acute dialysis unit. We work closely with our surgical colleagues in renal transplantation and vascular access. The rota also provides significant exposure to renal outpatient clinics, including general nephrology, low clearance, transplant, lupus and vasculitis.
All clinical work is under consultant supervision.
- Ward work – includes all jobs generated on ward round (TTOs, blood forms, clerking new patients, referrals, follow‑up of discharged patients, assessment of acutely ill patients, MDT meetings) and covers the renal high‑dependency unit with level 2 care, acute transplantation and the three acute nephrology wards.
- Outpatient clinic – FY2 will see patients with chronic renal disease and transplant patients. Clinics include general nephrology (at satellite units across NW London) or specialty clinics on site n tasks are assessing volume status, taking histories and following up patients.
- Admissions Unit – cover 1500–2100, seeing patients in the ambulatory RAU or the monitored RHTU who may be admitted.
- Dialysis Unit – cover 1000–1600.
- Ward/HDU long days: 0815–2115
- Nights: 2015–0915
- Clinics, dialysis and admissions: 6‑hour shifts
- On‑call requirements: 2.5 weeks of sets of nights (each 13‑hour shift) in a 4‑month rotation
- Wednesday:
- 0800 Renal X‑Ray meeting (weekly)
- 0820 Lupus Hot Cases MDT (weekly)
- 0915 Renal Histopathology meeting (weekly)
- 1130 Local renal teaching for FY/IMT (weekly)
- 1230 Hammersmith Hospital grand round (weekly)
- 1330 Renal grand round (monthly)
- 1330 Vasculitis and GN Hot Cases MDT (weekly)
- 1400 Renal open meeting (Multidisciplinary, monthly)
- Wednesday/Thursday: 1500 Complex Transplant Hot Cases MDT (fortnightly)
- Friday: 1200 Renal FY/IMT Peer Teaching Session (fortnightly)
- Friday: 1400 Inpatient Mortality Review Meeting (monthly)
We are an academic unit closely integrated with Imperial College London, including the medical school. There is great opportunity to participate in audit, quality improvement, research and teaching. We run several national postgraduate courses in renal histopathology, glomerulonephritis, renal transplantation, dialysis and nephrology for the acute physician. Study leave is encouraged, and a study budget will be provided.
