Location: City of Westminster

There is a fantastic job opportunity coming up at Northwick Park Hospital, with one post starting in August 2025 and one post starting in October 2025 for an initial period of 1–2 years (negotiable and extendable subject to performance). The post carries responsibility for teaching undergraduate medical students and, if desired, clinical opportunities. Candidates also have the chance to obtain a certificate in medical education (requires a separate application).

In addition, the successful candidate will be able to take part in part‑time research and to teach on medical simulation training sessions for Foundation doctors.

Teaching Responsibilities
  • Prepare and deliver tutorials, lectures, handouts and other teaching materials
  • Teach a wide range of activities, including tutorials, skills laboratory, bedside teaching and dedicated teaching clinics on an out‑patient basis
  • Show initiative and develop other teaching ideas such as student case presentations, grand rounds and role‑playing sessions
  • Maintain a patient‑centred approach in all teaching
  • Focus on the core curriculum and clinical skills required for Year 3 students during their main 8‑week attachment
  • Provide basic clinical teaching for the two‑week introductory course in Year 2 and Year 1 (emphasis on history taking)
  • Coordinate a second 8‑week block at the start of Year 3 (emphasis on system clinical examination)
  • Supervise and co‑ordinate acute takes and major surgery lists, provide small teaching and surgical skills teaching, and help with Thursday afternoon surgical lecture programme
  • Teach on the Final Year 6 students from August to December, delivering a lecture‑based course and small‑group bedside teaching, and organising PACES and OSCE stations
  • Possibly teach on postgraduate courses and to in‑house junior staff, both medical and non‑medical
Organisational Responsibilities
  • Assist the Undergraduate Coordinator and DCS with drawing up medical teaching timetables for Years 1, 2 and 3
  • Help establish a patient database for use in dedicated teaching clinics
  • Co‑ordinate the end‑of‑attachment Mock OSCE, mark Extended Case Assessments and prepare/mark other small tests
  • Organise clinical components of the final MBBS if held on site
  • Become an OSCE examiner after suitable training and may be involved with simulation equipment teaching after suitable training
  • Teach on simulation sessions at Chelsea in Westminster Hospital once a year
Example of Teaching Commitments per Week
  • Bedside and topic teaching

Year‑by‑Year Responsibilities
  • Year 1 – 2‑week attachment mid‑May: introduction day, 1 skills session, debrief session
  • Year 2 – 2‑week attachments (mid‑December and in March): mainly history taking; contribute to introduction day, debrief session, 1 skills session & simulation session
  • Year 3 – 8‑week attachments (mid‑October to December, 1st week of January to March, mid‑March to June):
    • Examination of systems
    • Contribute to introduction day, surgical tutorials, teaching clinics, teaching ward rounds
    • Bedside teaching; weekly student case presentations & demonstration of relevant clinical signs
    • Liaise with firms SPs & SHOs/F1‑2
    • Skills teaching
    • Monitor student portfolios
    • Mark extended case studies
    • OSCE – instructor for the formative revision session and examiner for the Year 3 OSCE (after training)
    • Other teaching initiatives
  • Year 6 – tutor for a group of final year students; teaching on final year revision course; co‑ordinate Year 6 PACES, recruit patients for exams; IV access skills training; NG tube & revision session in skills lab; orthopaedic teaching Year 5
