Overview
Kings College School is seeking to appoint a well-qualified, competent rowing coach on a casual basis, for maternity cover. This is an exciting opportunity to coach competitive students at one of the country's leading schools. You will support the director of rowing in the overall running of the boathouse, specifically with the J14 year group. The school is situated overlooking Wimbledon Common in south east England, with exceptional grounds and facilities.
The successful candidate will be supported by the director of Rowing and on-site assistance from experienced coaching staff, and will be required to support the rowing programme both on site at Putney/Wimbledon and at events and training camps. The Easter training camp will take place in Spain (27 March – 4 April); candidates should be available for these dates. There will also be a requirement to assist with training during holidays.
- Attend regattas and head races; assist with equipment and setup at such events
- Demonstrate sound understanding of rowing and sculling technique and rigging
- Act in loco parentis for groups during away events
- Assist the director of rowing with day-to-day administration of the club
- Design and implement comprehensive training programs tailored to different skill levels, from beginner to advanced
- Provide individual and group coaching sessions, focusing on technique, strategy and physical conditioning
- Prepare rowers for local, regional and national competitions
- Mentor pupils and foster a positive, encouraging training environment
- Monitor and evaluate pupil performance, providing feedback and adjusting training programs as needed
- Liaise with the director of rowing regarding facilities for fixtures and training
- Maintain a safe training environment by adhering to all safety protocols and guidelines
- Keep accurate records of pupil progress and participation; assist with administrative duties as needed
- Undertake any other rowing-related tasks reasonably requested by the director of rowing and the sports department
- Assist with compiling and reviewing risk assessments for the boat club
- Ensure safety at the boathouse and during away events
- Ensure all crew-coach communication equipment is operational and compliant
- Adhere to the school's health and safety policy and staff code of conduct
- Administer basic first aid to pupils as required, report incidents, and liaise with the school medical team (training provided)
- Take responsibility for the welfare of pupils at all times
- Adhere to and ensure compliance with the school's child protection and safeguarding policy
How to Apply
- Have experience in a similar role (essential)
- Be available to assist with training during school holidays (essential)
- Be available to coach children at races at the weekend (essential)
- Be competent in coaching rowing at a young level on a tidal river (desirable)
- Hold RYA L2 powerboat qualification and a British Rowing qualification (desirable)
