Overview

This post would suit candidates (including Out Of Programme Trainees) wishing to pursue a career in renal transplant surgery or someone weighing up career options in general / vascular / transplantation surgery, or urology. This post will provide an excellent opportunity to expand knowledge in pre/post-operative management of renal transplant patients and to develop basic general surgical/vascular/urological/multi-organ retrieval operative skills. There is provision to improve academic portfolios and support those wishing to obtain CESR applications.

There will be an opportunity to have allocated time for clinical research and quality improvement projects, that will lead to abstracts and publications. The postholder will be supervised by a consultant transplant surgeon and work in a multidisciplinary team. There is an excellent working relationship between surgeons and physicians and care is shared between the teams.

Responsibilities

The surgical team provides renal transplantation, dialysis access, urological and general surgery for patients with renal failure, as well as delivering National Organ Retrieval Service (NORS). The post also includes responsibility for the supervision and training of junior staff and teaching medical students at UCL.

Professional Practice and Opportunities

Terms and conditions of service are as for ST3+ / Clinical Fellows. The average hours of duty are 48 hours per week. The post holder will participate in out-of-hours cover for renal transplant surgery and multi-organ retrieval, and will be paid accordingly. The successful candidate will join a team of six consultant transplant surgeons, one higher surgical trainee, four senior clinical fellows, and 3 academic fellows, a core surgical trainee and an FY1.

We perform over 120 kidney transplants per year for the end-stage renal population of the North Central London sector. A major component of the job will be multi-organ retrieval (liver, pancreas, small bowel, kidney) with the National Organ Retrieval Service. A number of consultants have interests in other areas, for example urology (laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy, ureteric reconstruction, general urology), general surgery and specialist dialysis access surgery.

On-Call and Learning Environment

You will be expected to contribute to an on-call rota to cover our emergency service and will take turns with other trainees to attend operating lists, clinics and ward rounds. The renal surgery department is closely integrated with the transplant nephrology team, with whom we have an excellent relationship. Ward rounds are conducted jointly, providing a fantastic learning environment for the interested trainee.

There are opportunities for both short and long term research, including leading to a higher degree thanks to our links with UCL and the Pears Institute of Transplant and Immunology.
