Position Overview
Within Information Technology Services (ITS) the Data Center Infrastructure and Operations team is responsible for maintaining and operating the on‑premises data centers and the multi‑cloud virtual data center and collaboration infrastructures. Rhode Island College serves approximately 6,400 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students through its five schools and is committed to high‑quality academic programs and personalized learning experiences.
Primary PurposePlan, design, implement, operate, monitor, and support technical solutions related to all cloud services needs of the college.
- Administer cloud services and systems, primarily Windows, secondarily Linux.
- Build and maintain operational tools for deployment, performance, security and cost monitoring, and analysis of cloud services and systems.
- Plan, execute, facilitate, and support projects related to the transition and/or migration of non‑cloud resources into cloud services.
- Provision, configure, monitor, and maintain cloud services and security access.
- Implement and maintain operational tools for backups and disaster recovery of on‑premise systems and cloud services.
- Produce and maintain documentation and records relevant to the area of responsibility.
- Troubleshoot cloud resources and assist with cloud‑dependent services.
- Maintain proficiency in server administration, cloud system administration, and cloud Dev Ops technologies.
- Train and supervise student employees and network/telecom technicians as assigned and evaluate training needs.
- Analyzing and troubleshooting all issues.
- Establishing and enforcing standards and procedures.
- Evaluating and recommending existing and future cloud technology and services.
- Establishing best practices in system administration, cloud security, cost and performance monitoring.
- Maintaining security of all cloud services.
- Assessing technical needs of a department.
- Estimating resource requirements for developing specialized software.
- Perform duties of Senior Technical Programmer and other related duties as assigned by the Manager of Technical Services.
- Competence in managing cloud collaboration platforms (e.g., Microsoft 365, Google Workspace) and cloud services (Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services).
- Experience in Microsoft Windows server/system administration.
- Knowledge of data networking and data security principles.
- Ability to learn and use a variety of technologies and tools.
- Initiative, leadership, and coordination skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collegially with faculty, administrators, students, and colleagues.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
Experience: Minimum of six year’s experience in design, installation, and maintenance of computer systems, server administration, cloud technology, Sys Ops/Dev Ops engineering, with at least two years in cloud services technical support.
Preferred Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or closely related field.
- Experience in Linux server/system administration.
- Experience in networking, security, high‑availability, and disaster recovery concepts related to cloud platforms.
- Experience in producing and maintaining technical documentation.
- Experience in leading and coordinating technical projects.
- Experience coordinating with vendors and third‑party partners.
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions but requires lifting, moving, and installing moderately heavy equipment (e.g., computers) and other IT components.
