General Summary/Responsibilities

The Oncology Infusion Nurse is a registered nurse (RN) who partners with and advocates for patients/families/significant others to provide physical, emotional and spiritual support which impacts patient outcomes in a safe environment. The RN functions in a versatile role that demonstrates professionalism and promotes excellence and autonomy in the practice of Nursing. The RN utilizes the nursing process in conjunction with evidence-based principles to care for a diverse caseload of patients within the department scope of service.

The RN serves as guide, healer, collaborator, teacher, leader and sentry. The RN collaborates with and guides care delivered by the inter-professional team. The RN is accountable for compliance with the Ohio Nurse Practice Act, Nursing Code of Ethics and applicable regulatory standards. As an Oncology Infusion Nurse, the oncology nurse collaborates with other cancer care team members to assess and respond to the full impact cancer has on the patient and family, including the physical symptoms, functional limitations, psychosocial disruptions, and knowledge needs associated with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Oncology nursing is patient-centered and may encompass individuals, families, groups, and communities. The oncology nurse is accountable for delivering care within the framework of the nursing process. The scope of oncology nursing practice will include health promotion and disease prevention strategies, treatment and related physical care of disease management, psychosocial support, and education for active participation in decision‑making. The oncology nurse actively participates in professional role development activities, including quality assessment and improvement, practice evaluation, professional education, collegiality, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the review and clinical application of research findings.

Integrates the Collaborative Model of Care with a strong focus on patient-centered care into daily practice. Provides care for patients across the life span in a manner sensitive to social, cultural diversity. Demonstrates competency in all aspects of chemotherapy administration, immunotherapy administration, IV therapy, subcutaneous and intramuscular injection administration. Knowledgeable and practices within the ONS guidelines during any adverse event while administering chemotherapy, i.e. extravasations, infiltrations or chemotherapy spill incidents.

Associate Degree

Additional Requirements

    Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • Area of study or major:
    Nursing
  • Preferred educational qualifications: BSN Preferred, BSN Completion or Professional certification may be required
  • Position specific testing requirement: N/AN/A
Licensure/Certification /Registration
  • Valid Ohio RN license
  • Current CPR certification required at the time of hire
  • ONS Fundamentals of Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Certificate or must obtain within 30 days of hire
  • ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy Certificate or must obtain within 9 months of hire
  • OCN certification or must obtain within 1 year of eligibility (eligibility=2 years as RN and 2000 hours of adult oncology nursing practice)
  • ACLS required within 6 months of hire
Experience

Prefer expertise in peripheral venipuncture and expert assessment skills related to vascular access and IV Therapy access and IV therapy
