Highway Maintenance Specialist – Boulder, CO

Compensation and BenefitsBase pay: $2,053.85 biweekly ($53,400 annually). Additional $1,000 per month housing stipend. Annualized hourly rate: $25.67/hour, overtime $38.50/hour.

Description of Job What You Will DoNo two days are exactly the same. Daily work activities change based on project needs and weather, environment, and road conditions. You will be on‑call on a rotating basis and may be called to respond to weather and other emergencies. You will typically work in a team environment, with a lead specialist and multiple specialists at each patrol location.
Your Main Job Activities Include- Plowing snow
- Operating heavy equipment including tandem dump trucks, loaders, tractor‑mowers, etc.
- Mowing grass and weeds
- Removing debris from roadways, culverts, tunnels, and other sites
- Shoveling gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt
- Digging ditches
- Installing and repairing guardrails, highway markers, signs, and lighting
- Filling potholes and roadway cracks
- Setting out traffic‑control signs and cones
- Removing and covering graffiti
- Installing pavement markings and striping
- Stopping or slowing traffic in emergency situations
- Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs
- Following safety guidance and wearing proper safety equipment

What CDOT Provides- Personal protective equipment (uniforms, boots, hard hats, gloves, safety vest, respirator, tools)
- Full payment for CDL physical after the first year with CDOT
- Partial reimbursement (up to 50%) for CDL renewal after the first year with CDOT

- Use of appropriate personal protective equipment; work with chemicals and cleaning products; respirator use on certain equipment
- Work near traffic, sometimes high‑speed traffic; need for ladders and scissor lifts to heights of 10–20 feet
- Required to drive CDOT vehicles and respond to emergencies outside regular hours, including weekends and holidays
- Must be willing and physically capable of working in extreme temperatures and at elevations up to 12,000 feet for extended periods
At least two (2) years of physical labor and/or heavy‑equipment operation experience.
