Overview
CDOT is hiring a Highway Maintenance Apprentice in Loveland Pass. This is a term-limited position for up to two years with potential to apply for permanent roles. Apprentices receive two years of paid mentorship, classroom and hands-on training, and may earn their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) during the program. Full benefits are provided.
Responsibilities- Plowing snow
- Operating heavy equipment, such as tandem dump truck, loader, tractor mower, etc.
- Mowing grass and weeds
- Removing debris from roadways, including rock, mud, and deceased animals
- Removing debris from culverts, tunnels, etc.
- Shoveling gravel, sand, concrete, and asphalt
- Digging ditches
- Installing and repairing guardrail, highway markers and signs, warning signs, and lighting
- Filling potholes and roadway cracks
- Setting out signs and cones for traffic control
- Removing and covering graffiti
- Installing pavement markings/striping
- Stopping or slowing traffic in emergency situations
- Maintaining equipment and performing minor repairs
- Following safety guidance and wearing proper safety equipment
No two days are the same in CDOT highway maintenance. Your daily work varies by project needs, weather, environment, and road conditions. You will be on-call on a rotating basis and respond to weather and other emergencies. You will work closely with a mentor within a team environment in locations with at least one lead highway maintenance specialist and multiple highway maintenance specialists.

- Work near traffic, including high-speed traffic
- Use ladders and scissor lifts at heights of approximately 10’–20’
- Vehicle operation and rotating shift schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays
- Respond to emergencies outside regular hours and work overtime as needed
- May work in extreme temperatures and elevations up to 12,000 feet for extended periods
No previous education or experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications- Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section
- Strong work ethics, integrity, safety commitment, and willingness to learn
- Enjoys outdoor, physically demanding work and teamwork
- Effective communication, especially in safety-critical situations
- Experience operating equipment (e.g., dump trucks, loaders, bulldozers, backhoes) and with hand tools
- Basic computer skills and ability to learn new software/equipment
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license for Colorado; CDOT CDL Class A or B with appropriate endorsements within 12 months of hire
- Pass pre-employment screenings (background checks, education, driving and public records)
- May be required to pass a drug test and a DOT physical
- On-call and shift work; essential services designation
- May need to live within 30 minutes’ drive to respond promptly
- New employees receive two weeks of maintenance training; veterans receive one week of annual training
- May require Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6–12 months
- Willing to respond to emergencies outside normal hours and work overtime
