Job Description Shift Supervisor – Cedar Rapids, IA
This is a full‑time, exempt position.
The Shift Supervisor is responsible for achieving set tactical direction for the entire department within the Dry Grind Ethanol facility and a specific shift. This employee will work with and report to the Dry Grind Superintendent. Duties may vary day by day and include setting daily direction for operations, ensuring execution of standard work, fostering a positive safety culture, aligning on priorities, ensuring trainees meet goals, troubleshooting plant upsets, participating in plant initiative activities, and other tasks as required.
The Shift Supervisor is required to drive out losses within the department to ensure the plant can maximize efficiencies on a given shift.
- Direct the operation of the plant facility within established quality, housekeeping, safety, and environmental guidelines set by the organization.
- Coordinate daily operations performed by hourly production employees to ensure work is performed safely and efficiently.
- Adjust work assignments for hourly production employees to effectively utilize the team’s experience, training, and abilities.
- Ensure the safety of all personnel through compliance with OSHA regulations.
- Maintain a positive safety culture, coaching and mentoring employees on safety priorities.
- Provide recommendations for improvements to the department and/or programs.
- Recognize risks and recommend improvements.
- Communicate effectively within the department to hourly employees, contractors, maintenance, vendors, and leaders.
- Keep plant management informed of all matters that impact team morale and/or employee safety.
- Escalate plant concerns to appropriate department leaders as needs arise.
- Motivate hourly team members by leading by example and holding themselves to a high standard of integrity.
- Identify training needs of the shift staff and ensure resources are available.
- Work closely with each department to understand shift needs and challenges.
- Provide regular coaching and performance reviews.
- Lead operations meetings, safety meetings, and trainings.
- Analyze safety, environmental, and quality incidents, entering initial reports and investigations into Sphera software.
- Maintain a shift culture that embraces the ADM Code of Conduct and encourages positive reinforcement.
- Issue discipline (attendance and/or job performance) as warranted per Human Resources and Department Superintendent guidance.
- Conduct audits of the plant to ensure compliance with GMP, safety, health, and environmental standards.
- Assist with operational activities on D3 and in the field.
- Enter Work Orders as issues arise with appropriate prioritization (Code 1, 4, 7,
9). - Motivate others for task completion and make decisions with minimal information.
- Set up teams for success by issuing hot‑work and confined‑space permits.
- Assist in equipment periodic inspections.
- Align with department priorities and self‑manage workload.
- Lead by example through following ADM’s Code of Conduct and Core Values.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Work directly with assigned shift, following shift rotation.
- Work with various chemicals and caustics.
- Work with vibrating equipment on an occasional basis.
- Hazards include slippery/uneven surfaces and high elevations, constant exposure.
- High and low temperature extremes.
- Work in cramped positions frequently.
- Stand for long periods.
- Lift 50 lbs.
- Carry ladders and tools.
- Climb ladders.
- Walk long distances.
- Ability to work on multiple tasks and prioritize accordingly.

Base Pay
Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. Hourly and salaried non‑exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours.
