Role DescriptionThis full-time, field-based role near Cedar Rapids, IA supports commissioning and QA/QC activities on mission-critical projects including data centers. The Mechanical Inspector performs field inspections of HVAC equipment, hydronic piping, pumps, and liquid cooling systems to verify installation quality and readiness for commissioning. This role works alongside commissioning teams and construction personnel but does not manage contractors.
Required Qualifications:- Ability to work independently in field environments, manage inspection priorities, and coordinate directly with site personnel and commissioning teams
- 4+ years of hands‑on mechanical field experience (HVAC, piping, industrial mechanical, millwright, or similar)
- Mechanical commissioning support
- Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of mechanical systems including pumps, piping, motors, valves, or HVAC equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, installation layouts, and installed system conditions
- Experience troubleshooting, inspecting, or verifying mechanical equipment installation or operation
- Strong attention to detail and ability to document findings clearly using written reports and photos
- Willingness and ability to travel to project sites as required
- Experience supporting commissioning, startup, or system turnover activities
- Experience working in mission‑critical environments such as data centers, industrial facilities, or similar.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction certification
- EPA 608, NCCER, or mechanical trade certification (HVAC, pipefitter, millwright, or similar)
- Experience using documentation software such as, CxAlloy, Pro Core, Bluebeam, etc.
- Experience working with hydronic systems, chilled water piping, or liquid‑to‑chip cooling systems.
- Experience working on construction sites alongside mechanical contractors
- Perform field inspections of mechanical systems including HVAC equipment, hydronic piping, pumps, valves, and liquid cooling infrastructure to verify installation quality and readiness for commissioning.
- Verify mechanical installations meet project drawings, specifications, and installation standards, including equipment orientation, support, accessibility, labeling and overall completeness.
- Identify, document, and track deficiencies using written reports and photos, and perform follow‑up inspections to confirm corrective actions.
- Support mechanical system readiness prior to commissioning, including system walkdowns, equipment verification, and turnover readiness activities.
- Review mechanical drawings and installed conditions to verify systems are installed correctly and are ready for commissioning support activities.
- Coordinate directly with site personnel, contractors, and commissioning teams to obtain access, perform inspections, and verify system readiness.
- Maintain clear, organized documentation of inspection findings, reports and progress.
- Travel to project sites as required to support inspection and commissioning readiness activities.
