Mechanical Commissioning Lead – Data Centers – Cedar Rapids, IA
Our client is an engineering design and commissioning company with a national footprint that specializes in MEP critical facilities design. Responsibilities- Lead multiple commissioning projects consisting of a full team of commissioning engineers and commissioning project managers on a wide range of data center commissioning projects.
- Serve as a technical resource, managing the technical aspects of projects and guiding commissioning teams; initially may not manage staff directly.
- Ensure commissioning standards are followed for equipment pre-start-up and start-up procedures; develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Methods of Procedures (MOPs); ensure comprehensive commissioning documentation.
- Ensure the overall commissioning process meets high standards: commissioning test procedures and reports; commissioning logs, equipment checklists, and other tracking tools; comprehensive reports including recommendations for optimizing building operations, functional checklists, deficiencies, equipment operation, and maintenance manuals.
- Have the team follow Commissioning Standards: review design criteria, specifications, drawings, equipment submittals and other commissioning documentation; perform integrated system testing and load bank testing; conduct functional tests for building MEP systems (e.g., fire alarm/control systems, HVAC, chillers, CRAC units, electrical distribution, UPS, standby generators, emergency lighting); develop commissioning plans; follow company QC processes.
- Interface with clients, contractors, equipment vendors and owners’ agents as needed.
- Execute project assignments; interface with project contractors, vendors, testing technicians, and internal teams (engineering, design, etc.).
- Verify commissioning results in test reports and assist with field troubleshooting of commissioned equipment; field experience with Power Quality Analyzers, Power Disturbance Analyzers, data loggers and related testing equipment.
- 5 to 10+ years of experience in Electrical/Mechanical commissioning.
- Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering is a plus.
- Experience in A/E work on complex facilities or mission-critical projects; prior data center/mission-critical experience is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with heavy emphasis on writing, documentation and client interaction.
- Experience with Level 1-5 commissioning and managing commissioning teams for large-scale projects.
- Experience with IEEE/ASHRAE procedures and protocols is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of systems design for various projects; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Project.
- Military/veteran experience in electrical/mechanical fields is a plus.
- Willingness to travel 50–70% (not long periods; multiple shorter trips); if based near a major data center, travel may be closer to 10–20%.
- Must live near a major airport.
