Position: 2026 Teacher - KCU - Nixon

Overview

SUMMARY: Lead a class of 15-18 students with the goal of reversing summer slide in reading, writing and math. All students have a demonstrated need in literacy. Classroom teachers will instruct in all subject areas (reading, writing and math). Teachers have autonomy in developing strategies that will best meet the needs of their learners. The Program Director will communicate the priority standards and provide curriculum support as desired.

Teachers who are innovative, creative, nimble and proven will find the flexibility and support of this structure extremely attractive. Hands on experiences are encouraged and there is some funding to bring in materials that can help students grasp concepts through doing.

Eligibility & Scheduling: Teachers will have compensated planning time for 30 minutes each day while students are at enrichment class and will oversee lunch/recess daily. Applying for the position is a summer commitment. Please consider applying as a sub if you are not able to make a full commitment to the program this summer. Eligibility for summer programming employment is limited to teachers who are currently employed by the district and confirmed to return for the upcoming academic year.

Iowa Teaching Certification with an endorsement in reading preferred.

Summer Program
  • Program:
    June 15 – July 31 (no classes on June 19, July 3 and July
    6)
  • Mandatory Training:
    June 11-12 (8-12)
  • Student hours: 8:00 – 12:00
  • Teacher hours: 7:30 to 12:15
Compensation

$30/hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Essential Duties must be performed on-site. Other duties or tasks may be assigned.
  • Lead a class of 15-18 students with the goal of reversing summer slide by using engaging reading, writing or math strategies
  • Instruct in assigned subject areas (reading, writing and math)
  • Use the priority standards and provided curriculum materials with fidelity
  • Compensated planning time for 30 minutes each day while students are at enrichment class
  • Oversee lunch/recess duty to build relationships with kids
  • Collaborate with other KCU staff
  • Act as point of contact for families by communicating weekly with families with phone calls and newsletters and one Parent Night event
  • Reports to KCU Lead Teacher at the site
  • Plans for substitute in case of absence
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor s degree in Education required.
  • Reading Endorsement, preferred
Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and implement ideas contained in technical documents, assessment data, professional journals and regulations. Ability to effectively write reports and communications to students, colleagues, parents and staff. Ability to effectively present information orally and respond to questions from administrators, teachers, staff and students. Ability to assist students in the areas of language and literacy.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to perform basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, decimals and fractions. Ability to assist students in implementing these mathematical concepts.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve problems effectively. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
