The Austin Steam Train Association is located in Cedar Park, Texas, and plays a significant role in preserving the history and heritage of vintage steam and rail transportation. Our organization provides unique train experiences for the community and visitors, fostering an appreciation for the history of railroading. The mission of the Austin Steam Train Association is to preserve, interpret and recreate the first-hand experience of historic steam-era railroading for the enjoyment and edification of today's families and the generations to come.

Role Description

We are seeking a full-time Volunteer Coordinator for an on-site position in Cedar Park, TX. The Volunteer Coordinator manages vital aspects of the volunteer program including volunteer recruitment, orientation, training, retention, and recognition. The coordinator is responsible for scheduling of volunteers on all train rides; matching volunteers to appropriate tasks and roles, provide clear and concise communication to volunteers in a timely manner, and maintaining the volunteer database.

The coordinator will work closely with all members of the organization including the Executive Director, Executive Committee, Program Manager, Reservation Administrator, and Foreman, to ensure an exceptional experience is provided for ASTA's passengers.

This in-person position will work from our Cedar Park office at 40 hours a week, with standard office hours being Monday-Friday from 8:30am-5:30pm. Pay is $27 an hour, plus full benefits after 60 days. We are happy to consider non-standard work schedules!

Must be flexible to work occasional non-standard hours for new volunteer orientation, which you will work with our operational team to schedule. Rare weekend work will also be needed during our annual North Pole Flyer Train (4-5 days during November and/or December), as well as one day during our annual fundraising event—a Saturday in the fall.

Major Responsibilities
  • Serve as the organization's primary contact on volunteer programs, engaging individuals and community groups.
  • Implement established goals and objectives for ASTA's volunteer program which reflect the mission of the organization.
  • Recruit appropriate volunteers for the organization.
  • Conduct orientation and training for volunteers about policies, procedures, and safety on the railroad.
  • Communicate regularly with volunteers through individual phone calls, emails, and office visits.
  • Collaborate with ASTA office team on community activities related to volunteering for the organization.
  • Collaborate with ASTA office team to prepare the train for the weekend excursions.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement a Volunteer Appreciation Plan including recognition events and other volunteer events.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with and motivate a diverse group of individuals.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualification Wish List
  • Associate degree from an accredited U.S. college preferred but not required.
  • Two years of experience coordinating volunteers, or a similar group.
  • Exceptional verbal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with MS Office Applications.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to be flexible, multi-task, prioritize, and manage multiple projects with frequent interruptions.
Physical Wish List
  • Ability to lift 25+ lbs.
  • Ability to climb 3-4 stairs, which will allow you to board and deboard the train.
  • Ability to communicate, teach, and function while on board a moving train.
