JOB SUMMARY

Under limited supervision, the Construction Inspector is responsible for the inspection of utility and site construction associated with development projects to ensure the safety, economy and compliance of said projects through plans, specification, various codes, and departmental policies; job tasks may include inspection of public and/or private development construction and public right of way use permits; coordination with other City departments concerning construction related matters;

and providing information to the public concerning engineering and construction related issues.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs field Inspections of site grading, temporary erosion and sediment controls, water (connection to public water lines, domestic, fire lines, valves, and services), wastewater (mains, manholes, services, and cleanouts), stormwater (mains, manholes, outfalls, and ponds), driveway and pavement construction (sub‑grade, base courses, curbs, gutters, striping, signs, asphalt, and concrete pavement), sidewalks, and traffic control/work zone safety;
  • Inspects and coordinates utility construction inspections for right of way use permits;
  • Interacts with contractors and the public as a representative of the City on construction related matters;
  • Reviews plans and specifications of construction projects;
  • Serves on Development Services Committee to discuss construction projects, issues, and project close‑out;
  • Schedules and leads preconstruction meetings between contractors, developers, and other city departments for private development and right‑of‑way use projects as required;
  • Oversees the performance of field inspections to evaluate the work performed and materials used; verifies quality of workmanship, quality of materials used, and compliance with plans, specifications, estimates, applicable codes and regulations;
  • Notes deficiencies and deviations from plans; refers serious problems and disagreements in interpretation to developer’s engineer and city engineering staff;
  • Meets and corresponds with consulting engineers, developers, and contractors to discuss site developments and plan revisions;
  • Responds to and resolves public inquiries and complaints related to construction projects and development;
  • Leads final project walk‑through meetings to review data and answer questions as needed;
  • Coordinates the close‑out process by obtaining as‑built plans and other required close‑out documents and approves the issuance of a certificate of occupancy for each project;
  • Coordinates with GIS staff on as‑built plans;
  • Reviews and makes recommendations in maintaining and updating inspection records and files;
  • Maintains good documentation and files on all projects and supplements inspection records with photographs;
  • Responds to requests for information, provides technical information to city staff as authorized and provides assistance to the public within scope of authority;
