Job Description

The Surgical Technologist performs duties as a member of the surgical team to ensure safe and successful operative procedures. The position functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and directly reports to Surgical Services management. The Surgical Technologist supports system wide and surgical operations initiatives and practices, and actively participates in the surgical operations safety plan.

Schedule and Shift

This full‑time position requires 36 hours per week, working between 6:30 AM and 5:00 PM based on surgery volumes on varying days. Flexibility in availability is expected, and shift details will be discussed during the interview.

Essential Functions
  • Ensure the operating room and all surgical items meet sterilization criteria.
  • Maintain the sterile field and a safe environment.
  • Recognize and address sharps and fire safety processes.
  • Prepare the operating room and instruments for the surgical procedure.
  • Assist with sterile processing as needed.
  • Assist the surgeon(s) during the procedure within the ORT scope of practice.
  • Identify emergency situations and exercise judgment when responding to emergencies.
  • Assist with room turnover, cleaning, and prepare for the next procedure after the procedure.
  • Have an identified pathway opportunity for advancement to ORT II, III, and IV.

Minimum Qualifications (Level I)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.
  • Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technician program, or one of the following qualified alternatives:
    • Graduated from a non‑accredited surgical tech program within the past six months.
    • Two years of scrub tech experience in hospital or military surgical services within the last three years.
    • International training equivalent and legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Competent in basic procedures or one or more specialty areas/facility case mix.
  • Able to take assigned call.
Minimum Qualifications (Level II)
  • Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • Competent in basic procedures or one or more specialty areas and/or facility case mix.
  • Able to take assigned call.
  • Must be in good standing.
Minimum Qualifications (Level III)
  • Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
  • Competent in basic procedures and two or more specialty areas such as Orthopedics, Robotics, Neuro, Cardiovascular, Trauma, Transplant, Reimplantations, and/or facility case mix.
  • Able to take assigned call.
  • Must be in good standing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 1+ year of experience as a Surgical Technologist.
  • Proficiency scrubbing into Orthopedics, Robotics, General Surgery, Gynecology, ENT, and Urology cases.
  • Active national certification as an OR Technologist or Certified Surgical Technologist, expected within the timeframe outlined after hire.
  • Certification requirements vary by program status and include NBSTSA or NCCT certifications within one year of hire for graduates of accredited programs. Non‑accredited graduates must obtain certification as soon as possible to meet case‑tracking and work‑hour requirements.
Physical Requirements
  • Visual and manual dexterity for reading labels and manipulating equipment.
  • Strong communication skills for patient and team interactions, especially during emergencies.
  • Manual dexterity for precise handling of delicate equipment.
  • Ability to lift, bend, and carry supplies and equipment up to heavy weights.
  • Proficiency in walking, assisting patients, and moving equipment in crowded environments.
  • May require extended standing in a stationary position.
