We are a well-established civil and utility construction firm (est. 1973) serving the Denver metro area. Our team values safety, quality, and collaboration, and we are looking for a highly organized, detail-oriented professional to join our team.
The T. Lowell Controller is a hands‑on, single‑incumbent role responsible for the full spectrum of our accounting and finance operations. This position oversees all day‑to‑day transactional work as well as higher‑level accounting, compliance, reporting, and audit coordination.
This role is ideal for an experienced construction accounting professional who is comfortable operating independently, managing both administrative “busy work” and complex accounting functions, and serving as the Company’s internal and outward facing primary financial resource.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in construction accounting, be proficient in payroll processing, and have prior experience in a small company or startup environment where flexibility and self‑direction are critical.
Key Responsibilities Daily & Transactional Accounting- Process and manage accounts payable and accounts receivable, including invoice entry, coding, approvals, and collections
- Maintain accurate general ledger entries and supporting documentation
- Perform bank, credit card, and loan reconciliations
- Manage vendor records, W-9s, and 1099 preparation and filing
- Support job cost tracking and cost coding in coordination with operations and project management teams
- Process in‑house full-cycle payroll accurately and on schedule, including prevailing wage or certified payroll requirements, as applicable
- Maintain payroll records, deductions, garnishments, and tax with holdings
- Coordinate payroll-related filings and compliance (federal, state, and local)
- Partner with HR/Leadership on payroll changes, bonuses, and benefits deductions
- Maintain job cost systems and ensure costs are properly allocated and reported
- Support work‑in‑progress (WIP) reporting and job profitability analysis
- Assist leadership with cost controls, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Coordinate with project managers to resolve cost discrepancies and reporting questions
- Perform monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close processes
- Prepare internal financial statements and management reports
- Ensure accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of financial data
- Maintain accounting schedules, reconciliations, and supporting work papers
- Coordinate external audits, reviews, and requests from CPAs or auditors
- Support tax preparation by external accountants, including providing schedules and documentation
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax regulations, and industry requirements
- Maintain internal controls appropriate for a small organization
- Manage accounting systems, files, and financial documentation
- Improve and document accounting processes and workflows as needed
- Serve as a financial resource to leadership, operations, and project teams
- Handle miscellaneous administrative finance tasks as they arise
Required Qualifications
- 5–10 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in construction
- Demonstrated experience operating as a solo finance/accounting professional or in a very lean team
- Strong working knowledge of construction accounting, job costing, and payroll
- Experience processing in‑house full cycle payroll
- Proficiency with accounting software and Excel, preferably Job Power or similar
- High attention to detail with strong organizational and time‑management skills
- Comfortable balancing routine tasks with complex accounting responsibilities
- Prior, recent experience as a Senior Staff Accountant, Accounting Manager, or hands‑on Controller
- Experience in a small business, family‑owned company, or startup environment
- Familiarity with audits, WIP reporting, and construction‑specific compliance
- CPA or equivalent experience (not required)
- Self‑directed and highly accountable
- Comfortable “wearing all the hats” with no direct reports
- Practical, solutions‑oriented mindset
- Strong communication skills with non‑financial stakeholders
- Ability to prioritize and adapt in a dynamic construction environment
- Salary: $90,000 - $115,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications
- Discretionary bonus and profit share eligibility
- Company vehicle or mileage reimbursement may be provided for field visits
