Position: Solid Waste Collections Operator I - Temporary Street Sweeper

Overview

Temporary Contract Position - Street Sweeper April 20206 through December 2026

Typical schedule: Monday - Friday

Shift: 4:00 am - 12:00 pm

Eligibility for Health Benefit consideration after 90-days;
Paid-Time-Off; Potential for pension contributions

Responsibilities
  • A typical day as a Street Sweeper includes performing a pre-inspection of a street sweeper using Preventative Maintenance software.
  • Visit supervisor for assigned street sweeping area for the day.
  • Travel to the designated route to sweep as communicated by the supervisor.
  • Remove solids from sweeper as needed at designated locations.
  • End the route by traveling to City Service Center to fuel sweeper for next day and performing post Preventative Maintenance inspection at Solid Waste Facility.
  • Drive basic routes and operate a limited variety of refuse collection vehicles to collect refuse and/or street sweepings within Casper City limits.
  • Deliver refuse and street sweepings to a balefill facility.
  • Collect and transport recycle commodities to the processor using recycle, roll-off, and solid waste collection vehicles.
  • Monitor compaction and load restrictions for collection vehicles and determine the appropriate time to return to the Solid Waste transfer station to empty contents at designated areas.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on assigned vehicle(s) and report the need for major repairs; check fluid levels; grease and lubricate parts as required; replace filters; clean and care for tools and equipment.
  • Represent the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
  • Knowledge, Abilities, Skills,

    Education and Experience Knowledge (position requirements at entry):
    • Methods, materials, and equipment used in solid waste collection operations preferred.
    • Commercial vehicle operation and routine maintenance preferred.
    • Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck and heavy equipment operations preferred.
    • Safe driving practices.
    • Basic customer service practices.
    Abilities (position requirements at entry):
    • Routinely demonstrate the City of Casper core values.
    • Follow all City safety rules and procedures and immediately report all accidents/incidents or unsafe conditions to a supervisor.
    • Work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Safely and proficiently operate Class B Commercial vehicle.
    • Learn the geography and street system of the City.
    • Maintain a neat and professional appearance.
    • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
    • Follow written and verbal instructions and direction.
    • Prepare clear and concise reports.
    • Work rotating shifts.
    • Work according to safety standards under potentially hazardous conditions.
    • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
    • Learn the use and care of assigned equipment.
    Skills (position requirements at entry):
    • Driving a commercial vehicle.
    • Performing routine inspection and maintenance on a commercial vehicle.
    • Performing manual labor.
    • Providing customer service.
    • Oral and written communication sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. Inspecting, maintaining, and cleaning equipment.
    • Operating in a courteous, knowledgeable and tactful manner with customers, staff and the general public.
    • Ensuring compliance with safety standards.
    Education and Experience
    • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Minimum one year of experience driving and operating a Class “B” Commercial Vehicle preferred.
    Licensing and Certifications
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Wyoming Class B Commercial Driver’s License required.
