GENERAL

PURPOSE:

Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of varied automotive equipment and other equipment items. Employee will be responsible for all levels of such mechanical work along with the added focus on maintenance and repair of the emergency vehicles within the City’s fleet.

Note:

The salary currently posted reflects the Equipment Mechanic – EVT position; however, the position may be underfilled as an Equipment Mechanic. The salary range for the Equipment Mechanic is listed below.

Salary Range: 48

  • Hourly: $24.3738 - $33.5923
  • Biweekly: $1,949.90 – $2,687.38
  • Monthly: $4,224.79 – $5,822.67
  • Annual: $50,697.45 – $69,872.01
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position‑specific duties.

  • Inspects, maintains and repairs vehicles and equipment; coordinates tasks and trains shop staff as required.
  • Diagnoses and repairs component systems and sub‑systems relating to electrical, fuel supply systems, hydraulic systems, engine cooling systems and comfort control systems.
  • Disassembles engines and overhauls gas and diesel engines.
  • Adjusts ignitions, carburetors and fuel injection systems, overhauls transmissions and differentials.
  • Replaces wheel cylinders, relines and adjusts brakes; removes, mounts and repairs tires.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs air brake systems on heavy trucks and off‑road equipment.
  • Performs arc and acetylene welding as required; fabricates parts as needed.
  • Lubricates vehicles and changes oil and oil filters; bleeds fuel systems.
  • Installs auxiliary equipment, batteries, tires, wiring, door glass, door handles and brakes.
  • Performs a variety of public work equipment operation and labor tasks as assigned.
  • Maintains records of repairs made, work orders and time worked.
  • Orders parts as needed, enters data into computer system, maintains records of parts requisitions, inventory and work orders.
  • Ensure the quality maintenance and repair of emergency vehicles; stay abreast of the ever‑changing needs of this unique aspect of the city’s fleet.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None.

Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED equivalent, and two (2) year’s experience in vehicle and equipment servicing and maintenance.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s License. All certifications required to diagnose and repair emergency vehicles. Certification requirements may change as equipment changes and employee must ensure the certifications they hold are the most current and accurate for the emergency vehicles within the City fleet.

Knowledge of
  • City policies and procedures.
  • The methods, tools and equipment used in the repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Safety standards and practices in a shop environment.
Skill in
  • Diagnosing and repairing mechanical, brake, fuel and electrical defects in a wide variety of automotive and heavy duty truck equipment.
  • Reading technical manuals and specifications.
  • The safe use of tools, materials and equipment used in vehicle and equipment maintenance.
  • Maintaining accurate service records.
  • Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
Ability to
  • Diagnose and repair emergency vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair non‑emergency vehicles
