Position: Technician, Dyeing & Finishing Applications Laboratory

This position is responsible for assisting with processing research projects and maintaining equipment and machinery within the Dyeing & Finishing Applications Laboratory (DFAL) of Cotton Incorporated. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: operating dyeing and finishing equipment, maintaining adequate levels of inventory, and participating in internal safety teams. In addition, various projects and activities relating to general upkeep of the DFAL may be assigned, as needed.

Core Functions
  • Assist with processing research projects within the Dyeing & Finishing Applications Laboratory (DFAL)
  • Weigh dyes and chemicals per project need and specification
  • Operate dryers, jets, chemical/mechanical finishing equipment, and package dyeing equipment
  • Assist DFAL Manager with maintaining inventory of dyes and chemicals
  • Assist with coordination of incoming project requests submitted by internal and external customers as needed
  • Coordinate planning and scheduling of projects in absence of Manager, DFAL
  • Assist with outside companies conducting trials in DFAL
  • Move and route project materials manually which includes but is not limited to: relocating fabric rolls and chemicals from warehouse, to lab, to finishing areas
  • Develop and maintain working relationship with dyestuff suppliers, chemical suppliers, machinery manufacturers and mills as needed
  • Perform lab tours, give presentations on laboratory activities and research, and represent Cotton Incorporated at meetings and in professional organizations at the request of company management
  • Follow safe work practices at all times and participate in internal safety teams as assigned
  • Maintain professional and industry knowledge by participating in industry and association meetings to keep abreast of technical developments
  • Participate in internal Spill Team (must become respirator certified), Confined Space team, and weekly safety meetings
Job Requirements
  • High School Diploma;
    Bachelor’s degree in textiles or equivalent related work experience
  • Training in chemical and general lab and equipment safety and health
  • 2+ years dyeing industry experience, a plus
  • Experience with in a mill or plant environment, a plus
  • Experience in textile fabric and apparel product development with cotton, blends, and 100% synthetic fibers, a plus
  • Knowledge of wet processing as it relates to preparation, bleaching, dyeing, finishing, and garment washing, a plus
  • Ability to weigh out chemicals and dyes per project specifications
  • Familiar with safety standards and regulations of working within a textile laboratory environment
  • Possess a mechanical aptitude
  • Self-motivated, team player
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills
  • This position requires domestic travel 5-15% of the time
Working Conditions / Physical Demands
  • Periods of high noise levels and temperatures up to 110°F
  • (Seasonal) warmer work areas
  • Varied working conditions in off-site locations due to travel
  • Frequent sitting, standing, bending, twisting, reaching, and occasional moderate to heavy lifting (up to 60 pounds)
  • Use of eye and hearing protection as well as protective wear as required by chemical SDS
  • Frequent phone and face-to-face contact with internal/external contacts at all levels
  • Consistent exposure to and work with a wide variety of chemicals
  • Involvement with and exposure to various equipment and instruments
  • Required personal protection devices to be worn including but not limited to: safety glasses, lab coat, ear plugs, gloves, aprons, face shields, fitted respirator, and goggles
