Position: ASSISTANT DIVISION MANAGER- CULTURAL ARTS

Cary is seeking a collaborative, inquisitive and passionate professional to join our Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources department as an Assistant Division Manager

The Assistant Division Manager
- Cultural Resources will play a vital role in assisting the PRCR Cultural Resources Division Manager in all work-related aspects of their job. This position will perform expert-level professional work in providing operational oversight of cultural facilities (Cary Arts Center, Page-Walker Art & History Center, The Cary Theater, etc.), programs, staff, and events. The Assistant Division Manager will support the Division Manager in budgeting, planning, staffing, and implementation of cultural initiatives, and will serve as acting Division Manager in their absence.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Cultural Resources Division Manager. Supervision is exercised over full-time, part-time, and seasonal staff.

Requires the ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and some holidays with periods of high volume/workload.

  • Provides operational leadership for cultural facilities, working closely with facility supervisors to ensure effective scheduling, staffing, programming, and rentals across all venues.
  • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive cultural programs and events that align with Town policies and strategic priorities.
  • Oversees staff recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and performance management in collaboration with supervisors to ensure consistency across the division.
  • Conducts regular facility inspections with supervisors and evaluates programs to ensure quality, safety, and accessibility standards are met.
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures, and service standards related to facility operations, event management, and customer experience in partnership with supervisors.
  • Oversees capital improvements, renovations, public art installations, feasibility studies, and other special projects within the division when assigned.
  • Assists with long‑range planning efforts led by the Division Manager for facilities and programs, contributing to cultural master plans, facility studies, and strategic initiatives.
  • Assists with preparation, justification, and administration of the division’s operating and capital budgets; analyzes expenditures, revenues, and cost‑effectiveness.
  • Negotiates and manages contracts, agreements, and partnerships with artists, organizations, vendors, and promoters in coordination with supervisors; pursues grants and sponsor ships.
  • Prepares reports, evaluations, and recommendations related to program performance, customer satisfaction, and operational improvement.
  • Utilizes data and performance measures to assess program success and recommend enhancements to meet community needs.
  • Supports citizen advisory boards, committees, and working groups as assigned(e.g., Public Art Advisory Board, Cultural Arts Committee, Cary Art Daze Work Group).
  • Administers Cary’s annual Cultural Arts Nonprofit Grants Program, overseeing all phases including application preparation, contract execution, payment processing, and final reporting.
  • Coordinates and promotes public relations and marketing efforts in collaboration with departmental communications staff; represents the division at public meetings, community events, and professional organizations.
  • Responds to citizen inquiries and works with supervisors to resolve operational issues and ensure a positive customer experience at all facilities and programs.
  • Fosters partnerships with community organizations, schools, nonprofits, and other cultural stakeholders.
  • Ensures compliance with safety, accessibility, and risk management standards across cultural facilities and events.
  • Serves as Division Manager when needed.
