About the job

The Technology, Infrastructure, and Architecture team is looking for a Sr. Atlassian Engineer to architect, design, implement, and operate Jira and Confluence tools. As an expert you will drive standards and best practices to ensure quality services and sustainability. Our team partners with executive stakeholders and drives enterprise‑wide transformation through scalable, governed, and collaborative delivery frameworks. Helping to cultivate adoption, lead enterprise‑wide improvement, and be a trusted advisor in maturing Atlassian platforms across departments.

As a Senior Atlassian Engineer, you will:

• Lead and support tool migrations, upgrades and updates, ensuring minimal or no downtime and data integrity during maintenance windows. Conduct regular health checks and maintenance tasks to keep the platform running smoothly.
• Stay current with Atlassian product updates, ecosystem changes, and industry best practices. Evaluate, install, and configure Jira plugins, Confluence macros, and integrations to extend the platform’s capabilities and integrate with other tools in the technology stack. Perform Jira front‑end administrative tasks as needed.
• Implement and enforce security measures to safeguard data and ensure compliance with data protection regulations and internal policies.
• Develop and maintain backup and recovery strategies for Jira and Confluence. Document backup and recovery processes and train relevant staff members.
• Investigate, troubleshoot and fix issues related to Atlassian tools and database servers.
• Monitor system performance and usage, identify bottlenecks, and implement optimizations to ensure optimal system performance and reliability.
• Work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment.
• Be encouraged to participate in open‑source projects on behalf of SAS.
• Ensure all applicable security policies and processes are followed to support the organization’s secure software development goals.

Required qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or related field
• 8+ years as Atlassian administrator with hands‑on experience in Jira customization such as workflows, screens, fields, dashboards, and reports
• Strong scripting skills in JQL and Groovy
• Practical experience with Atlassian APIs, webhook configurations, Jira automation, and integrations
• Atlassian Jira Certifications
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills to resolve Jira and Confluence related issues efficiently
• Equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered in place of the above qualifications.

Additional competencies, knowledge and skills

• Experience with Python
• Experience with reporting and data analysis within Jira and Confluence
• Knowledge of cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, Azure)
• Experience with Atlassian Marketplace apps (e.g., Script Runner, Project Configurator)
• Experience with Atlassian Data Center to Cloud migrations.
• Technology Savvy – Leveraging one’s practical knowledge and understanding of recent technology tools, solutions, and trends to improve work results, solve work problems, and take advantage of new business opportunities.
