The OpportunityThe Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Senior Substation Designer functions in a senior lead engineering technician capacity. Under general direction, you will modify or create deliverables and perform assignments of a design nature by applying engineering principles and established design practices to develop complex design concepts. The role requires advanced experience with AutoCAD Electrical (SDS) and Protection & Controls drawings (AIS and/or GIS).
You will provide technical guidance and may lead other engineering professionals.
Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based on manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.

Key Responsibilities- Engineering Standards
- Pro‑activate by providing guidance and direction using knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes, and Black & Veatch policies and procedures.
- Review project requirements and determine correct format and contents of deliverables.
- Quality / Continuous Improvement
- Promote quality within project, group or section.
- Review design inputs to ensure consistency.
- Assist in ensuring deliverables comply with applicable codes and standards.
- Maintain drawing control and historical records.
- Drive continual improvement and change management efforts.
- Engineering Production
- Apply basic engineering principles and design practices for moderately complex concepts and deliverables.
- Make decisions on deliverables and input interpretation.
- Handle difficult technical assignments and provide guidance to other professionals.
- Perform design calculations, detailed material quantities, and estimates.
- Use advanced applications (e.g., modeling and design software) in performance of work.
- Review others’ deliverables, define work assignments, maintain schedules, and program control systems or participate in plant start‑up activities as needed.
- Project Coordination
- Coordinate with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development.
- Support field activities and communicate design requirements, progress and schedules.
- Client Focus
- Assist with identifying key client interests and drivers; determine key clients in some instances.
- Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate concerns.
- Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology
- Assist discipline or department management in developing and communicating design standards and process improvement activities.
- Identify training and development needs for personnel they supervise.
- Possibly be recognized for expertise in one or more areas.
- People Management (supervision, career development, mentoring)
- Assist with performance management process, recognition and corrective actions.
- Participate in career planning, learning and development.
- Supervise engineering technicians, providing mentoring, instruction, delegation of work and feedback.
- Resource Management (staffing)
- Assist in monitoring staffing levels and skill sets for projects.
- Assist in identifying resource application needs and process requirements.
- Associate Degree (preferred) or Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Design Related Technology.
- Typically a minimum of 8–11 years related work experience.
