Join a team that values community service, collaboration, and professional growth! The Town of Cary, serving over 170,000 residents, seeks a passionate and skilled Code Enforcement Official (Building) to uphold building standards and ensure compliance with regulations.

The ideal candidate will perform technical inspections in new residential and commercial construction, working closely with contractors, architects, homeowners, and staff, under supervision of the Chief Code Enforcement Official.

Responsibilities include:

  • Inspect construction sites to ensure conformity with plans and codes.
  • Conduct live remote inspections as per NC DOI guidelines.
  • Identify violations, notify stakeholders, and issue warnings or stop work orders.
  • Review and approve alternative methods/materials when appropriate.
  • Maintain detailed records and documentation.
  • Testify in court cases related to code violations.
  • Assist in other inspection areas as needed.
  • Perform additional related tasks.

Qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of building materials, methods, and construction stages.
  • Understanding of state building codes and regulations.
  • Ability to detect workmanship issues, hazards, and interpret plans.
  • Effective record-keeping and communication skills.
  • Physical ability to conduct inspections and communicate effectively.

Minimum requirements:

  • Associate degree in building construction or related field, plus at least five years of related experience.
  • Preference for candidates with a Level 2 Building Trade certificate, aiming for Level 3.
  • Additional certifications in Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical are encouraged.
  • Experience with municipal building inspection and holding professional licenses is preferred.
  • Experience with Building Codes and GC license holders are encouraged to apply.

Conditions of employment include drug testing, background checks, and a valid driver's license.
