Overview

SACT Nurse Practitioner – Band 6, 37 Hours 30 Minutes/Week. Based at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. An exciting opportunity for an experienced SACT Nurse to progress into a Nurse Practitioner role in Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT). The role is a senior position working clinically within SACT day units to support, educate and develop staff nurses within the role.

Main Duties
  • Lead on education and training, supporting new staff and existing staff to enhance knowledge within Oncology/Haematology and SACT administration.
  • Educate and supervise nursing staff; provide regular direct clinical supervision and hands-on clinical work to develop competence in clinical skills and SACT administration.
  • Lead on providing teaching and education sessions to the nursing team weekly.
  • Work between the SACT Day unit at NCCC-Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle and Henderson Suite, West Cumberland Hospital (Units operate Monday–Friday, 08:00–18:30).
  • Teach and liaise with external providers to develop training for staff.
  • Utilise clinical skills to assess patients; perform non-medical authorisation of blood products where appropriate.

Essential Criteria
  • Significant experience in Oncology and/or Haematology
  • UKONS SACT Passport
  • Significant experience administering SACT currently
  • Practice Supervisor and Assessor/Mentorship
  • IV Drug Competent
  • Cannulation skills
  • Venepuncture Skills
  • CVC management skills
Desirable Criteria
  • Accredited SACT course
  • Teaching qualification/course
  • Evidence of audit/service improvement
  • Leadership qualification/experience
  • Non-Medical Authorisation of blood products or willingness to undertake
  • IRMER trained or willingness to undertake
  • Clinical Skills Course or willingness to undertake

Role Definition & Responsibilities

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust defines a nurse practitioner as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of the role is to perform specialised clinical procedures and/or advanced patient assessment and decision-making within a defined patient group.

To work towards the role of an independent nurse practitioner, contributing to the delivery of a quality service aligned to clinical need and resources within specialist nursing practice.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the patient remains central to a streamlined journey and high-quality care.
  • Providing prompt responses to calls from colleagues and prioritising clinical need.
  • Managing a defined caseload, including assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment within defined protocols.
  • Providing immediate care management and communicating care plans to patients and significant others.
  • Reviewing and referring to appropriate personnel (AHP, resident medical staff, specialist registrar, or critical care outreach).
  • Liaising with Patient Services Coordinator and communicating within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Contributing to education and training for ward/departmental staff, nursing, and medical students.
