Job Title:

Irrigation Technician (City of Carson)

The City of Carson is accepting applications for the Irrigation Technician position. Continuous until filled. First review of applications will be on Thursday, February 12th, 2026.

Vacancy Information: One full‑time (FSLA Non‑exempt) vacancy with a 4/10 schedule:
Tuesday to Friday, 6:00 am to 4:30 pm (includes a 30‑minute unpaid lunch break). Work hours may be changed as needed.

Job Summary: Under direction of an assigned supervisor, the Irrigation Technician maintains and repairs the city's irrigation systems and performs a variety of skilled grounds‑maintenance duties. The role may oversee a grounds‑maintenance crew as required.

Essential Duties
  • Maintains, adjusts and repairs irrigation systems using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Plays pipelines, valves, sprinkler heads and time clocks.
  • Reads blueprints, uses probes and digs areas to locate, lay or repair irrigation lines.
  • Locates, replaces, and repairs low‑voltage underground irrigation wiring.
  • Builds forms, mixes and pours concrete to establish, repair and secure base structures.
  • Orders, stores and maintains parts, tools, supplies and equipment.
  • Observes and enforces safety practices and procedures.
  • Performs Senior Grounds worker duties when circumstances require it.
  • Maintains routine records related to vehicle and equipment maintenance, work orders and other maintenance activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and/or

Experience:

High school diploma or GED plus three (3) years of full‑time, paid experience in skilled‑level grounds maintenance, including one (1) year of full‑time experience maintaining and repairing irrigation systems. Related field experience may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.

Knowledge Of:

  • Irrigation systems, components, maintenance and repair.
  • Plumbing and pipe‑fitting technique.
  • Hand and power tool use and operation.
  • Methods, equipment, tools and materials used in grounds maintenance work.
  • Plant, tree and grass characteristics common to the area.
  • Plant disease and pest control techniques.
  • Training and providing work direction.
  • Safety practices and procedures.
  • Maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Applicable sections of the California Vehicle Code.
  • Routine record‑keeping techniques.

Skill and Ability To:

  • Read blueprints.
  • Repair and troubleshoot irrigation systems.
  • Identify common plants and trees.
  • Perform semi‑skilled to skilled grounds maintenance work; assist in training and supervising others.
  • Operate a variety of grounds‑maintenance tools, equipment and machines safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain tools, equipment and vehicles in clean and proper working condition.
  • Lift objects weighing 75‑100 pounds.
  • Observe and enforce safety practices and procedures.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Maintain routine records and reports.
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Perform medium to heavy manual labor.

License and Certificate: Valid California Class C driver's license.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Stand, stoop, reach and bend frequently.
  • Require dexterity of hands to manipulate small objects.
  • May stand for long periods.
  • Lifting, pushing and/or pulling objects approx. 75‑100 pounds.
  • Subject to outdoor environmental conditions and inclement weather.
  • May work with hazardous materials and protective apparel.
  • May work around loud noise and moving mechanical parts.
  • May respond to emergency situations.
  • May drive City or personal vehicle.
Recruitment Process
