job summary
under close supervision, perform routine and repetitive manual duties on construction, maintenance setup and repair crews in a department; observe safety regulations; perform duties in a higher classification as assigned; and perform related duties as required.
hoursvaries monday–sunday, depends on facility needs.
essential duties- public works maintenance crew: load and unload heavy materials or equipment from trucks; dig and fill holes, trenches and ditches; maintain and repair streets; operate automatic and manual digging tools; operate motorized equipment such as trucks and skip loaders or other power equipment of comparable size and complexity; service and lubricate motorized equipment; clean hand tools and work areas; divert traffic using flags and barricades;
cut down weeds in vacant lots. - park maintenance crew: maintain grounds, medians and outdoor landscaped areas including planting, cultivating, trimming, watering and spraying plants, trees, and grass; operate park maintenance equipment such as sprayers and mowers; make minor repairs to irrigation systems; divert traffic using street cones.
- building maintenance crew: maintain facilities and buildings including cleaning rugs, walls, floors, rest rooms, and office spaces; perform building repairs and construction work; work irregular shifts as required.
- carson community center setup/custodial crew: maintain facilities; dust and polish furniture, woodwork and fixtures; vacuum carpets; order and maintain supplies; prepare work schedules and provide work direction to maintenance aides; inspect custodial and setup work; operate equipment; train maintenance aides; maintain records; assist in personnel selection; perform related duties as assigned.
education and/or experience
completion of formal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the required level; some experience performing basic laboring work. Community center requires two years of custodial and setup work, one of which must be in a hotel, banquet, meeting room or trade show facility.
knowledge of
- tools and methods employed in basic laboring work; basic operation of motorized equipment.
- provisions of the california vehicle code applying to the operation of vehicles on the highway.
- community center: proper methods, equipment, terminology and materials used in custodial work and physical setup for meeting rooms, conventions, banquets, trade shows.
- health and safety regulations.
- cleaning materials and disinfectants used in custodial work.
- record‑keeping techniques.
skill and/or ability to
- learn the operations of the department to which assigned.
- use tools and equipment with skill and safety.
- learn to read and interpret blueprints.
- work from heights.
- understand and carry out oral and written directions.
- meet approved minimal physical and medical standards.
- demonstrate physical endurance; agility, and strength necessary to perform heavy manual labor.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
possession of a valid california class iii driver’s license and must be insurable by the city’s insurance carrier.
