Overview
The Customs Exam Safety Specialist independently oversees and administers occupational safety and regulatory compliance programs across assigned Customs Exam Station (CES) facilities. The role exercises independent judgment in evaluating safety risks, interpreting OSHA, DOT, and company requirements, and determining appropriate corrective and preventive actions. Acting as a safety subject matter expert and internal consultant, this position partners with Corporate Safety, Divisional, and Operational Leadership to influence safety strategy, training effectiveness, and regulatory compliance outcomes.
The role operates with autonomy in managing audits, compliance reporting, investigations, and safety initiatives, while providing actionable recommendations to leadership to support a safe and compliant operating environment. This position reports to the Operations Support Manager and functions as the primary safety resource for assigned facilities.
- Independently evaluate, audit, and administer facility safety programs, ensuring compliance with OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards.
- Interpret regulatory requirements and determine appropriate corrective actions related to safety audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
- Analyze safety data, incident trends, and audit results, preparing reports and recommendations for site and corporate leadership.
- Serve as a consultative advisor to operational leadership regarding risk mitigation, behavioral-based safety practices, and regulatory adherence.
- Lead safety investigations involving work-related injuries, PITCO events, and near misses, determining root cause and recommending corrective and preventive measures.
- Review and prioritize safety-related maintenance and operational risks, exercising discretion to address imminent hazards and escalating issues as necessary.
- Design, facilitate, and evaluate OSHA-required, equipment certification, and operational safety training, adjusting content based on compliance gaps and risk exposure.
- Maintain and oversee OSHA logs, workers’ compensation records, training matrices, and operator certifications, ensuring audit readiness and regulatory accuracy.
- Provide guidance to leadership on compliance implications, risk exposure, and best practices, supporting informed operational decisions.
- Prepare and distribute executive-level safety reports, dashboards, and compliance summaries for assigned facilities.
- Partner with customers and cross-functional teams to establish safety objectives and monitor performance against defined benchmarks.
- Exercise professional discretion in managing safety documentation, audit schedules, and compliance priorities across multiple facilities.
- Participate in cross-functional safety initiatives and special projects, applying independent judgment to scope, prioritize, and execute deliverables.
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Bilingual (English / Spanish) preferred.
- 2-3 years previous Safety experience necessary.
- Operator experience a plus.
- Must be OSHA certified (OSHA 10 or OSHA 30).
- Must have DOT compliance knowledge related to warehouse and Class A drivers.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Suite products.
- Strong communications skills; both verbal and written.
- Team player.
- Must be self-motivated and work independently.
- Must be detail oriented and ability to manage multiple projects.
- Willing to be flexible with the work schedule and hours with possible weekends.
- Must be able to interact with all levels of employees.

- Bending, stooping, squatting, climbing and crouching 25%.
- Frequent exposure to moving machinery.
- High paced work environment with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Office setting with exposure to warehouse environment as the work being performed requires.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions and temperatures in / Out of warehouse.
