Overview
This full-time Licensed Practical Nurse 2 position is located at Northern Nevada Correctional Center in Carson City. Under supervision, the incumbent provides nursing care to inmates in a correctional setting in accordance with established nursing standards and Department of Corrections policies. Primary duties involve distribution of medications to inmates, processing refill requests and new medication orders, monitoring, and ordering floor stock medications.
The role also includes assisting medical providers during inmate appointments, assisting on the man down team, and responding to potential medical emergencies. This position involves significant inmate contact.
- Describe nursing care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act and under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Mid-Level Practitioner, or physician.
- Contribute to assessment of patient health status by collecting, reporting, and recording objective and subjective data; observe condition or changes; note signs and symptoms of deviations from normal health; participate in developing written care plans.
- Assist in therapeutic procedures to provide emotional and physical comfort; maintain safety, health, and well-being; assist in physically restraining patients as needed and follow facility procedures; notify appropriate personnel and document actions.
- Administer medications as prescribed, ensure route of administration, count controlled medications for security, monitor for side effects or allergies, observe effectiveness, and document findings.
- Document nurse progress notes in medical charts, review charts for changes in orders, transcribe as needed, prepare reports/records, and assist with quality improvement activities including chart audits and statistics; ensure regulatory standards are met in the care delivery process.
- Provide emergency medical treatment (e.g., CPR and first aid) to stabilize patients per established policy and complete related accident/incident reports.
- Prepare and maintain medical treatment rooms, ensure supplies are available, and stock medical and related supplies.
- Provide prescribed education to patients and families about health habits and treatment; provide health-related education and training to staff as assigned.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living and encourage independence; supervise or participate in therapeutic interventions; act as a positive role model.
- May delegate to auxiliary personnel direct care duties consistent with licensure and competency; may schedule and transport patients to outside appointments as allowed; coordinate/participate in clinics; receive prior approval for billing as needed; conduct screening tests; administer immunizations; create and maintain related records.
- Incumbents perform the full range of duties to provide nursing care to inmates in a correctional setting, including individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities, or patients in a 24-hour inpatient skilled nursing facility.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Nevada.
- Two years of experience as an LPN, including at least one year providing nursing care to inmates in a correctional setting, or to individuals with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities, or patients in a hospital or skilled nursing facility.
- Working knowledge of practical nursing theory and practice as applied to relevant settings; nursing principles and therapeutic interventions; commonly prescribed medications; quality assurance and regulatory standards; routine laboratory tests and diagnostic procedures; operation and use of standard medical equipment; documentation processes.
- Ability to recognize and respond to hostile/combative behavior; provide health education; provide emergency medical treatment when required; recognize and report changes in condition; identify and report potential medication side effects and interactions; delegate appropriate assignments to subordinate staff.
