Job Description

The Infusion Prior Authorization Pharmacy Technician supports timely patient access to infusion therapies delivered in hospital outpatient infusion centers, ensuring insurance authorizations are obtained in alignment with outpatient facility billing requirements. This role works closely with infusion center nursing teams, pharmacy, providers, and financial clearance teams to ensure clinical documentation, orders, and authorization details meet payer requirements specific to hospital-based infusion administration.

The technician is responsible for securing coverage and maintaining detailed documentation that supports successful reimbursement for outpatient infusion services.

Essential Functions
  • Initiate, prepare, and submit prior authorization (PA) requests for medications administered in hospital outpatient infusion centers.

  • Verify insurance benefits, including medical benefit coverage for hospital outpatient services, site-of-care rules, place-of-service restrictions, and payer-specific hospital authorizations.

  • Compile and validate clinical documentation (e.g., chart notes, labs, diagnosis codes, treatment plans) specific to infusion encounters.

  • Coordinate with prescribers to ensure orders contain all elements needed for hospital-based infusion (diagnosis, plan of care start date, frequency, weight-based dosing, supporting labs, prior therapies).

  • Track PA status and follow up with payers to prevent delays in infusion appointments; communicate outcomes immediately to infusion scheduling and nursing.

  • Maintain standardized PA workflows tailored to outpatient infusion operations across multiple locations.

  • Participate in daily/weekly huddles with infusion leadership and revenue cycle teams to resolve barriers or backlogs.

  • Ensure accurate documentation of authorization reference numbers, approved service location, units, visits, and authorization validity period, specific to outpatient facility use.

  • Document payer communications in the EHR/authorization system.

  • Monitor and initiate renewal authorizations for ongoing therapies.

  • Understands and complies with state and federal laws, regulations, policies and procedures, and guidelines related to their specific area of practice.

  • Participates in and supports financial responsibilities of the department, facility, and Intermountain Health.

  • Provides delivery of medications, information, and service in a professional, timely manner and is actively engaged in department and team goals, activities, and projects.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to successfully function in a fast paced, service-oriented environment.

  • Competent in understanding and usage of computers and software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google. Ability to learn new applications relevant to the position.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification as appropriate to practice site.
