Description

This recruitment is for full‑time, non‑exempt Deputy Sheriff 1 and Deputy Sheriff positions at the Carson City Sheriff's Office. The positions perform law enforcement and crime prevention work: enforce state and local laws and traffic regulations, perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Sheriff's Office. The positions also preserve the peace, detaining and interviewing violators, apprehending suspects, and responding to assistance calls.

They can also be responsible for the care and custody of inmates in the Detention Center.

Recreational marijuana use in Nevada is legal, but usage is illegal on a federal level. Recent use may result in a disqualification.

Deputy Sheriff 1 – Non‑POST Certified
  • Must obtain Nevada P.O.S.T. Category I Basic Certificate and Nevada P.O.S.T. Category III Basic Certificate within 18 months of employment.
  • Salary: $26.48 - $27.54 per hour; $55,076 - $57,279 annually.
Deputy Sheriff
  • Must have Nevada P.O.S.T. Category I Basic Certificate and/or Nevada P.O.S.T. Category III Basic Certificate at the time of hire.
  • Salary: $30.85 - $39.03 per hour; $64,159 - $81,181 annually.
Recruitment Process

POST Physical Fitness Test
  • 14" vertical jump.
  • Illinois Agility Run – 19.5 seconds or less.

  • 300‑meter run – 68 seconds or less.
  • 1.5‑mile run/walk – 16:57 minutes or less.

The recruitment process also creates an eligibility list; all candidates are placed on the list for six (6) months.

Example of Duties
  • Assist with the operation of jail facilities including court transportation, classification, booking, release, medical treatment, meals, exercise, personal hygiene, and supervision of inmates.
  • Assist and interact with other Sheriff's Office personnel, other city and outside law enforcement organizations and businesses to accomplish tasks while maintaining professionalism and integrity.
  • Identify, attend, or conduct training, educational programs and seminars; participate and present preventive education through community and school projects.
  • Patrol assigned areas looking for illegal, hazardous, and suspicious activities and persons; provide scene security and protection for emergency personnel; operate vehicles safely.
  • Enforce local, state, and federal laws and regulations; conduct traffic stops and investigate traffic accidents.
  • Respond to emergency and non‑emergency calls; interrogate suspects, communicate with victims, witnesses and suspects; identify and collect evidence; complete detailed reports using proper grammar and spelling; perform search and surveillance duties.
  • Represent the Office at court hearings, serve arrest and search warrants, and enforce child and adult orders of protection.
Qualifications
  • High school education or GED; plus required post‑certification as above.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Requirements as per NRS Chapter 289 (SB 225): sworn affidavit of no disqualification, no disciplinary discharge, and no pending investigations.
  • Proficient in a medication/medical exam and pass medical exam.
  • Citizen of the United States, at least 21 years old, and good moral character.
