associate engineers perform a broad range of engineering work not requiring licensure by the nevada state board of professional engineers and land surveyors. Associate engineers are distinguished from engineering technicians by greater latitude in the interpretation and application of established engineering criteria, and their technical expertise in the particular program area and/or knowledge acquired in a baccalaureate course of study in engineering or a related discipline.
In addition, associate engineer duties are typically distinguished from advanced engineering technician duties by a greater responsibility for reviewing, interpreting and using judgment to make recommendations and determinations based on data received, organized, compiled and summarized by lower level technical staff including engineering technicianscertification by the nevada state board of professional engineers and land surveyors as an engineer intern; or bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field;
or two years of journey level technical experience equivalent to an engineering technician iii in nevada state service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.
this position is a staff 1, associate engineer underfill for a staff 2, associate engineer and is based in carson city within the scheduling & estimating section of the design division at the nevada department of transportation (ndot). It serves a pivotal role in supporting the successful planning and delivery of transportation projects throughout the state. The incumbent, under the supervision of senior staff, supports the planning, cost estimation, and data integrity functions essential to the successful delivery of transportation infrastructure projects statewide.
Responsibilities include the development, review, and validation of detailed engineers' cost estimates using ndot's project delivery, planning, and financial software, masterworks.
the incumbent ensures that estimates are complete, accurate, and compliant with current departmental standards and procedures. This includes maintaining bid price tables, authoring and updating the cost estimation manual, and training project estimators in the proper use of ndot's project delivery, planning, and financial software platforms. The position requires coordination across multiple ndot divisions to facilitate funding alignment and project scheduling.
the incumbent plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of project data within masterworks, ensuring that all project information is current, consistent, and accessible for decision-making and reporting purposes. The incumbent coordinates updates to the five-year project work plan, including data integration and report generation delivered in alignment with project timelines. Additional responsibilities include the collection and reporting of project data for ndot and fhwa performance measure 13, ensuring accuracy and compliance with established deadlines.
This role involves collaboration with ndot's information technology division to initiate, test, and validate system enhancements and bug fixes within the masterworks environment.
the incumbent is responsible for ensuring that system updates are successfully deployed and that operational reliability is maintained. Additionally, the position may contribute to early-phase project development by assisting in the creation of conceptual design packages. This includes preliminary roadway geometrics, quantities, and cost estimates that support scoping and feasibility analyses.
