the nevada department of transportation (ndot) is recruiting for a professional engineer within the structures division in carson city, nv. This leadership role oversees and performs federally mandated bridge and tunnel safety inspections across the state to ensure the safety, reliability, and longevity of nevada’s transportation infrastructure.
the supervisor professional engineer leads a team responsible for collecting and analyzing structural condition data, evaluating bridge and tunnel safety, and developing maintenance and repair recommendations. This position plays a key role in shaping ndot’s statewide asset management and inspection program.
key responsibilities- supervising and mentoring routine bridge inspection staff and ensuring work quality, consistency, and adherence to federal standards.
- performing and overseeing routine, non-redundant steel tension member (nstm), in-depth, special, and damage/emergency bridge and tunnel inspections in compliance with the national bridge inspection standards (nbis) and national tunnel inspection standards (ntis).
- collecting and verifying specifications of the national bridge inventory (snbi), specifications for the national tunnel inventory (snti), and element-level inspection data.
- reviewing and developing bridge repair and maintenance strategies based on inspection findings.
- producing detailed bridge and tunnel inspection reports using inspect x bridge management system software.
- preparing and managing bridge inspection schedules to ensure timely statewide inspection coverage.
- conducting truck permit evaluations and performing various bridge management responsibilities.
- traveling statewide up to 50% of the time, typically up to one week per month, to lead and perform inspection activities.
special note: registration as a professional engineer is required at the time of employment and as a condition of continuing employment.

licensed professional engineers engage in the practice of professional engineering which includes, but is not limited to, professional services involving the application of engineering principles and data, or responsibility for supervision of construction or operations in connection with public or private utilities, structures, buildings, machines, equipment, and projects wherein the public welfare or the safeguarding of life, health or property is concerned.
Duties and responsibilities require independent control and direction, and the use of initiative, skill and judgment applied to the research or design of professional engineering work. All positions in this series require licensure as a professional engineer (p.e.) by the nevada state board of professional engineers and land surveyors. Current licensure as a professional engineer (p.e.).
- plan, organize, schedule and oversee program/project activities by coordinating activities with other sections, divisions, and agencies to complete assignments on schedule and under budget.
- prepare reports, letters, memos, agreements, forms and notes to communicate information to others; review reports, letters, memos, agreements, forms and notes prepared by staff members for completeness, accuracy and compliance with regulations, policy and industry best practices.
- compile and present complex engineering information to management and in briefing meetings.
- attend public meetings and hearings to provide technical expertise to the public and other entities.
- write, review, negotiate and secure agreements with consultants and/or contractors and coordinate their activities as required.
- under general direction, incumbents perform professional engineering functions requiring the exercise of judgment in the analysis of complex data and the application of recognized engineering concepts and principles.
