Summary
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Program is designed to hire transitioning service National Guard, Reserve, and Veteran corpsmen, combat medics, and medical technicians into positions at VA Medical Centers as integral members of the medical team. Candidates generally qualify based on U.S. Armed Forces experience or equivalent education.
Qualifications- Applicable to positions at GS‑4 and above. Requires the Health Aid and Technician Series (0640) minimum qualification entry.

Experience:
One year of experience equivalent to the GS‑6 grade level, including administering medications, performing minor surgical procedures, ordering diagnostic studies, and documenting results under the direction of a Licensed Independent Practitioner. - Education:
One full year of graduate education (18 semester hours) or an internship that includes courses directly related to the Intermediate Care Technician role. Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with application materials. - Combination:
Successful completion of graduate level education and specialized experience meeting total experience requirements for the grade level. - Preferred Qualifications:
Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman, Combat Medic, or Medical Technician is highly desired. Examples of desired military occupational specialties include 4

NOIC, X4NO, 1T2X1, 68W, 18D, HM0000, HM8404, HM8425, HM8402, HM8401, HM8403, HM8406, and HS‑Basic Health Services Technician. - Physical Requirements:
Extended periods of bending, standing, and walking; recurring physical exertion assisting patients.
- Perform ongoing patient care duties in an outpatient clinical setting, completing all tasks after documented training and demonstrating appropriate competency.
- Assist and perform technical health‑care procedures under the direction and supervision of licensed personnel, as competency is demonstrated.
- Screen patients, collecting patient information, completing clinical reminders, obtaining health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identifying health‑related conditions that may impact the patient’s status.
- Complete approved templates and tools such as intake/outtake forms, normal result note follow‑up, clinical reminders, and intervention notes established by the agency.
- Assist in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an outpatient setting, including crisis intervention and management of aggressive or suicidal patients.
- Assist licensed staff with delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life‑threatening situations, including equipment setup and treatment during in‑person or virtual visits.
- Operate specialized medical equipment to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes, observing patient status and reporting changes to licensed clinical staff.
- Provide emergency medical care as part of the Rapid‑Response Team and assist in training other clinical staff.
- Perform diagnostic tests: vital signs, 12‑lead ECG, point‑of‑care blood testing, and medication administration (topical, oral, intramuscular, etc.) in accordance with national and local pharmacy and facility guidelines.
- Assist with wound care: bandaging, dressing application, wound measurement, and post‑procedure care.
- Document all actions, interventions, and patient responses in the electronic health record, ensuring thorough and appropriate documentation.
- Travel for training may be required.
Work schedule:
Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
