Physical Therapist

General summary

A Physical Therapist (PT) is a licensed professional responsible for providing medically prescribed physical therapy services to patients. The PT helps individuals recover or improve function after injury or illness by evaluating their condition and devising a customized rehabilitation plan. The goal is to develop, maintain, and restore maximum movement and functional ability to enhance quality of life.

Primary job functions

  • Evaluate patients upon referral to determine problems and goals in cooperation with physicians.
  • Support and collaborate on the plan of care as determined by the physician and healthcare team. Provide treatments accordingly. Perform periodic re-evaluations and adjust the plan as needed. Coordinate and assist with patient care.
  • Interpret and communicate evaluation findings and treatment plans to patients, families, and team members.
  • Supervise Physical Therapist Assistants, Rehabilitation Aides, and students involved in patient care.
  • Provide, recommend, or fabricate adaptive devices, orthotics, or prosthetics. Train patients, families, and staff in their use.
  • Maintain accurate patient records reflecting treatment, evaluations, updates, discharge summaries, telephone orders, and billing.
  • Apply clinical knowledge and develop skills for evaluating and treating pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients.
  • Travel between facilities or treatment locations as necessary.
  • Perform tasks within the scope of education, knowledge, and organizational policies, adhering to local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, meetings, and in-services as needed.
