Primary

Purpose:

Help meet physical and instructional needs of individual students with disabilities inside and outside Applied Academics classroom. Assist with the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEP) and/or Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs. Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

* Associates Degree or minimum of 48 college credits

* Paraprofessional Certification for Educational Aide or other such credentials as may be required by the State Board for Educator Certification.

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

* Ability to work well with children

* Knowledge of general office equipment

Preferred Experience:

* Previous successful experience working with children

* TBSI/CPI Training

Major

Responsibilities and Duties:

* Demonstrate acceptable work habits including teamwork, initiative and dependability.

* Report to work on time each day.

* Perform routine clerical duties.

* Assist the teacher in preparing Special Ed instructional materials and classroom displays.

* Work with individual special needs students or Special Ed small groups to develop motor skills and conduct instructional exercises assigned by teacher.

* Assist with the administration and scoring of Special Ed tests and assignments.

* Assist in supervising special education students throughout the school day, both inside and outside of the schools. This may include lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.

* Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom

* Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.

* Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events, as needed.

* Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.

* Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.

* Help manage behavior of students. This includes intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.

* Assist students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning.

* Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.

* Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students.

* Maintain confidentiality.

* Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.

noise; exposure to biological hazards (bacteria, communicable diseases)

Mental Demands:

Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
