Job Details
• 13-week contract in the CCU (Coronary Care Unit) of an acute care Critical Access Hospital (CAH) with a Trauma Level 4 designation,
• 6-bed CCU that may flex to accommodate Med Surg/Peds patients as needed,
• Common diagnoses include CHF, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, and DKA,
• Procedures performed in the unit include central line insertions, thoracentesis, and paracentesis (performed by provider),
• Goal nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2, but may be up to 1:4 depending on acuity and Med Surg/Peds needs,
• RNs are required to titrate drips; common drips include Cardizem, insulin, and nor epinephrine,
• CCU nurses are responsible for monitoring telemetry on the unit and managing BiPAP, vents, and respiratory treatments during nights and weekends when RT is not available,
• RT equipment includes CPAP, BiPAP (V60), Vapotherm, and Hamilton ventilator,
• Night shift, 3x12-hour shifts per week with 7 PM start time,
• Every third weekend required, covering Fri/Sat/Sun (flexibility for Sat/Sun/Mon if needed),
• 6-week cyclic scheduling with efforts to accommodate schedule preferences,
• Floating to the Med Surg/Peds unit is required; cross-training to behavioral health and ER is optional,
• EMR: MEDITECH,
Job Requirements
• Active IA or compact RN license required,
• Current AHA certifications: BLS and ACLS,
• Preferred certifications: TNCC, NIHSS, and PALS (facility will support obtaining PALS if candidate is willing),
• Minimum 3 years of CCU experience required,
• Minimum 1 year of travel nursing experience required,
• CAH experience preferred but not required,
• BSN not required,
• Must reside within a 50-mile radius of the facility,
• Experience titrating drips required,
• Experience with respiratory equipment (BiPAP, ventilators) preferred given RT coverage limitations,
Additional Information
• Orientation consists of two 12-hour shifts (24 hours total),
• Charge Nurse oversees both Med Surg/Peds and CCU sides but is not always CCU-trained;
House Supervisor (based in the ED) oversees the entire hospital and covers CCU breaks and lunches,
• No in-house hospitalist or intensivist; patients are followed by private physicians, with ER physicians responding to emergencies and codes,
• Holiday coverage required - one major and one minor holiday per season depending on contract timing,
• Scrub colors: grey, black, pink, or white in any combination,
• Candidates are expected to be aware of and contribute to active quality improvement projects on the unit,
• Medication drawer keys are not individually issued to contract staff; 4 shared keys are stored in the Pyxis and must be checked out at the start of each shift and returned at the end,
• The unit emphasizes a positive work culture and expects candidates to be engaged team members,
